Pilon's Shutout and Third-Period Goals Lift Women's Hockey to Weekend Sweep

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown women's hockey put an end to a scoreless first 50 minutes in a big way with three third-period goals for a 3-0 win and a weekend sweep over RIT on Saturday at Meehan Auditorium.
Â
The Bears (8-9-1) have now won three-straight games, while the Tigers (10-9-2) are on a two-game losing streak after getting swept.
Â
Sophomore goaltender Mégane Pilon earned her first-career shutout in her first start of the season with 19 saves.
Â
Sophomore Jade Iginla netted her third goal of the weekend and team-leading 10th of the year. Freshmen Ava DeCoste and Sam Broz found the back of the net as well.
Â
"60-full minutes of complete hockey today," said Head Coach Melanie Ruzzi. "We were bringing it offensively, possessing pucks and creating scoring chances. Huge credit to their goaltender, she played outstanding and late in the third period we found a way to put a couple in."
Â
It was back-and-forth hockey over the first 40 minutes. Brown had nine shots in the first, while RIT had eight. The Bears showed that they were the better team in the second with an 11-4 advantage in shots on goal.
Â
It was Iginla who finally beat the RIT goalie to break it open with an assist from freshman Margot Norehad. Iginla and sophomore India McDadi later set up DeCoste for the second goal of the game, and Broz sent home the empty netter from senior Cassidy Piersiak for the 3-0 final.
Â
"It was a start-to-finish effort on both ends of the ice," said Ruzzi. "Huge credit to Mégane on getting her first-career shutout to complete the sweep."
Â
Brown heads to UConn for a road test on Tuesday night at 6 p.m.
