Women's Hockey Starts New Year with 4-1 Win Over RIT
1/5/2024 8:00:00 PM | Women's Ice Hockey
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown women's hockey started the New Year with a 4-1 victory over RIT on Friday night inside Meehan Auditorium.
Â
Despite a 25-day layoff, the Bears (7-9-1) looked sharp. Sophomore Jade Iginla found the back of the net twice, while freshmen Margot Norehad and Sam Broz each scored as well. Broz and Sophomore India McDadi each had two assists, while Norehad, freshman Ava DeCoste, sophomore Gali Levy and senior Meadow Carman also picked up assists. The lone goal for the Tigers (10-8-2) came from freshman Emma Pickering.
Â
Senior goaltender Kaley Doyle finished with 30 saves for her seventh win of the season.
Â
"I was proud of the team to gain pace quick," said Head Coach Melanie Ruzzi. "It's always hard coming off a long stretch, almost a month, of being away from playing games so I thought that was really good. We implemented a couple new things and they executed really well and we created chances on offense. We need to shoot the puck more, but we made the most of our chances, which is a really good thing."
Â
It only took the Bears five minutes into the first to get on the board on their first shot of the night. Broz and Levy passed from behind the net to Norehad for a straight-away shot to make it 1-0. That score would hold until the end of the period.
Â
Brown then worked a two-on-one breakaway to its advantage early in the second when Norehad and Carman found Broz for the 2-0 advantage with 18:02 to go in the second.
Â
Iginla lit the lamp late in the second with a sweet set up from McDadi and freshman Ava DeCoste to extend the lead to 3-0 with 12:21 left in the period.
Â
RIT scored early in the third, but Iginla tacked on the final goal on an empty netter, as the Bears were too much for the Tigers and secured their first win of 2024.
Â
Brown and RIT meet again on Saturday at Meehan Auditorium at 3 p.m. to conclude the series.
