PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Sophomore Jessica Lin and freshman Emily Ford earned two of the four highest beam scores in program history on Sunday as the Brown gymnastics team defeated Alaska Anchorage and Southern Connecticut State to sweep the home opener at the Pizzitola Sports Center. The Bears totaled 192.900 points, edging Alaska Anchorage who took 192.425, followed by SCSU at 191.100.
Making her collegiate debut in Brown's lineup, Lin won on beam with a mark of 9.900, which sits tied for second all-time in program history. Ford finished at 9.875, which is tied for fourth-best in program history with Olympian Alicia Sacramone '07. The Bears also picked up individual wins on bars from Asta-Sollilja Farrell, on floor courtesy of Julia Bedell, and Ford won the all-around at 38.125.
Brown scored 48.250 on vault to hold the lead after one rotation. Bedell led the Bears on vault with a 9.750 to finish second overall. Ford was next for Brown, tying for sixth place with a season/career-high of 9.650 and Sophia Dewar followed with a 9.625.
Brown put up 47.575 in the second rotation on bars with Farrell taking first place overall at 9.750. Sophomore Liza Marcus took third overall at 9.700 and junior Maya Davis added a 9.625.
Brown finished the meet strong with its best two events coming on beam and floor to overtake Alaska Anchorage, who held the lead through three rotations. Ford and Lin helped rally the Bears by ending the rotation with two of the top scores in program history. Ford scored 9.875, which moved her into a tie for fourth on the school's all-time list with Sacramone, who obtained that score back in 2007. Not to be outdone, Lin anchored the event and earned scores of 9.95 and 9.85 to win the event at 9.900, a mark that ties her for second all-time with Taylor Schulze (2022 at USAG Nationals). The school record of 9.925 was set by Brown gymnastics legend Jayne Finst in February 2001.
Rounding out the meet on floor, Brown scored a 48.800 for their highest event score of the day, taking each of the top three spots in the event with Bedell winning at 9.850, followed by Dewar at 9.800 and Marcus tying for third with a score of 9.775.
Brown will return to action at home next Sunday by co-hosting the Rumble & Tumble with wrestling. Gymnastics will face Yale in dual meet while the wrestlers will square off against Princeton. Both events will start side-by-side at 1 p.m. A limited number of tickets are still available at BrownBears.com/tickets.
