NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Brown women's basketball team withstood a late Yale run to hold off the Bulldogs in a 76-71 road win on Saturday afternoon. The victory moves the Bears to 2-0 to start Ivy League play for the first time since the 2005-06 season and pushes the team to 8-2 on the road this season. Brown entered Saturday as one of just one of seven teams in the nation with seven or more road wins this season.
Senior Kyla Jones led all scorers with 19 points to go with five rebounds, four assists and five steals. Sophomore Grace Arnolie tallied 17 points and a team-high six rebounds on 5-of-10 shooting while playing all 40 minutes. Junior Isabella Mauricio scored 16 points and was a crucial 6-for-6 from the free throw line. Sophomore Alyssa Moreland also scored in double figures with 13 points and four rebounds.
For the game, Brown shot 46.2 percent from the floor, and held Yale to 39.1 percent. Each team turned the ball over 17 times, with eight of Brown's coming in the final six-plus minutes of regulation when Yale went on a 17-0 run. Yale held a 38-24 edge in rebounds, including a 14-4 advantage on the offensive glass and 15-4 in second chance points.
Yale held a 9-8 lead at the first media timeout after a back-and-forth opening six minutes of play. Moreland hit two free throws coming out of the timeout to give the Bears the lead back and helped to spur a 14-0 run over the final 4:42 of the first quarter. Moreland drained a three from straight-on to push the lead to 15-9 with just over a minute remaining. After Mauricio hit both free throws following a technical foul, Arnolie drained another three to push the lead to 20-9 after one quarter.
The run extended to 16-0 following a layup from Gianna Aiello before the Bulldogs scored their first points in nearly six minutes on a jumper. Yale pulled within eight, but nine straight from the Bears got the lead to 35-18, highlighted by a Mauricio three from the right wing, and a triple from Jones following a steal.
Yale drained a three-pointer just ahead of the halftime buzzer, ending an extended 14-2 Bears run to bring the score to 38-23.
Jones grabbed a steal and fed Arnolie up ahead for the quick layup to push the lead to 48-29 midway through the third. A 5-0 Yale run to close the third quarter pulled the Bulldogs within a dozen at 54-42 heading to the fourth.
Arnolie hit a three to push the lead to a game-high 21 points, 71-50, with 4:17 to go. From there, the Bulldogs stormed back, ripping off 17 in a row and using a full court press to create turnovers and pull within 71-67 with 32.4 seconds left.
Mauricio broke the run with two free throws to get the lead back to six. After a Yale bucket, Mauricio went back to the line and sank two more to push the lead back to 75-69. Moreland pulled down the defensive board and tacked on another free throw before Yale beat the buzzer to bring the final to 76-71.
The Bears will return home for the first time in nearly six weeks on Monday afternoon when they will face Harvard at 3 p.m. on ESPN+.
