PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Despite a fast start to the game, the Brown women's basketball team came up on the short end of a 73-59 defeat to Harvard on Monday afternoon at the Pizzitola Sports Center. The loss is the first this season for the Bears in Ivy League play, with Brown (11-5) and Harvard (9-7) now each sitting at 2-1 through three league games.
Senior Kyla Jones led the Bears in scoring with a game-high 22 points and six rebounds. Sophomore Grace Arnolie finished with 18 points, one shy of her season high, along with six rebounds and a game-high six assists while shooting 50 percent from the floor. Senior Mya Murray added six points, six rebounds and two blocks. Sophomore Ada Anamekwe chipped in eight points, five boards and two steals.
Harvard held a 45-38 edge in rebounding, and shot 41.2 percent from the floor while going 8-for-22 from three-point range. Brown shot 35.8 percent from the field and was limited to just 20.8 percent from three-point range.
Brown started off the game hot with a 10-2 run, with four different players scoring points before the first media timeout. Arnolie sank a three-pointer to open the scoring and Jones converted an and-one to give the Bears the early eight-point advantage.
Following the break, the Crimson ripped off nine unanswered to take the lead, which was part of a 13-2 run overall to hold a 15-12 lead after one quarter.
Harvard hit three of its first five shots to start the second quarter, including a pair of triples to take a 26-19 lead before a timeout at the 6:45 mark. Brown would get within five on two occasions after two layups by Jones and then climb back within six after a wild off-balance three-pointer by Arnolie beat the shot clock with under 40 seconds remaining to make it 32-26 at the half.
Brown shot 30.6 percent in the opening half and made only one of their final 12 attempts from beyond the arc to close the half, while Harvard shot 37.7 percent and was 4-for-10 from three-point range.
Brown got within five once again early in the third before Harvard ran off 10 unanswered as part of a larger 14-2 run to lead 48-31 at the 3:53 mark. Harvard entered the fourth leading by 18 and built the advantage to a game-high 21 less than two minutes into the quarter on a three by Harmoni Turner that made it 58-37. Brown outscored Harvard 25-20 in the final frame and trimmed the deficit to 14 points in the closing seconds on a hoop and free throw by Jones.
The Bears return to action this Saturday, January 20 with a trip to Cornell. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. on ESPN+.
