Women's Rugby Takes 33-0 Shutout Win Over Queens
9/23/2023 1:33:00 PM | Women's Rugby
EMMITSBURG, Md. – The Brown Bears (2-1) broke a scoreless deadlock in the second half with five tries – including three from Nikki Lynch – to take a 33-0 win over Queens on Saturday.
"It was a tale of two halves as both teams attempted to try and play as if the conditions were dry and clear," said Kathleen Flores Women's Rugby Head Coach Rosalind Chou. "The rain and wind from tropical storm Ophelia made for a messy first half.
"We made adjustments at the half to attack more conservatively, narrowly, and directly and it proved fruitful for us. It was a forwards' game and we saw all the tries come from them. Nikki Lynch had a well-earned hat trick and the whole pack is credited with winning the physical battle in the mud."
After a scoreless opening half, Lynch touched down in the 47th and 52nd minutes with Kendall Cunningham hitting the conversion after the first try for a 12-0 lead.
Elizabeth Mahoney recorded her second try of the fall with Cunningham hitting the conversion to make it 19-0 Bears with 20 minutes remaining.
Lynch added her third try of the match in the 72nd minute and Akilah Cathey got on the scoresheet in the 80th minute to extend Brown's lead. Cunningham and Julia Murray added the respective conversions to push the score to 33-0.
Brown heads to Cambridge, Massachusetts to take on Harvard on Saturday (Sept. 30) at 1 p.m.
