PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown men's soccer came away with a 3-1 victory over UMass Friday night at Stevenson-Pincince Field to start the 2023 campaign.
Senior Kojo Dadzie picked up two goals for the 10th and 11th in his career, while freshman Heechan Han came away with his first-career score. Junior Tanner Barry finished with two assists, while freshman Carlo Brown had a helper as well.
"It was a really good win tonight, never easy to play against UMass," said Scott Bratt, Zisson Family Assistant Coaching Chair and Recruiting Coordinator. "The guys came through in some difficult times in the game and started to combine well in the attacking third. Kojo scored two great goals and Heech scored from a set piece as well."
UMass was aggressive early on, but Brown had opportunities to score and broke through in the 25th minute. Carlo Brown found Dadzie on the left side who sent the ball top shelf past the keeper for his first of the game.
Sophomore goalkeeper Henrik Weiper made a strong stop in the closing minutes to keep it a one goal advantage. Weiper would finish with four saves.
The Bears turned up the heat in the second half and scored two quick goals. Dadzie beat his defender and made it 2-0 in the 57th minute off a long pass from Barry. Han then capitalized off a deflection from the UMass goalkeeper in the 59th minute to bring the score to 3-0.
UMass picked up its only goal on a penalty kick in the 87th minute from sophomore Sefunmi Taiwo.
"It's exciting that this was our first game of the season, whereas UMass had played several good teams already," said Bratt. "Looking at the team it's a performance we can build on and move forward in the season."
Brown returns to the pitch on Monday at 7 p.m. at home against Fairfield.
