Field Hockey Opens Season at Home Against LIU, Holy Cross

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown Bears open the 2023 campaign at Goldberger Family Field as the LIU Sharks and Holy Cross Crusaders make the trip to College Hill on Friday and Sunday, respectively.
Friday's game against the Sharks is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. with Sunday's match against Holy Cross set to begin at noon. Both games will stream on ESPN+ with live stats available through BrownBears.com.

SCOUTING THE BEARS
- Brown returns more than 80% of its offense from 2022, including First Team All-Ivy selections Lucy Adams and Lexi Pellegrino.
- Defensively, Celia Donner and Julia Hitti headline the returners. Hitti enters the season with eight career defensive saves and is three shy of matching Hannah Leckey '20 for the program watermark.
- Brown looks to replace goalkeeper Jodie Brine, who started all 17 games in 2022. Junior Ella Edmonds and first-year Kylee Del Monte will vie for the starting job.
- Head coach Britt Broady enters her second year at the helm of the program. Broady guided the Bears to their best start to a season in decades in 2022 and will look to build on a strong first season on the sideline.
- LIU opened the 2023 season with a 5-1 road loss at UMass Lowell under first-year head coach Mike Pallister. The River Hawks opened the scoring with consecutive goals in the third quarter to pull away from the visitors.
- The Sharks finished the 2022 season with a 6-12 overall record with wins over Georgetown and La Salle. Notably, seven of LIU's 12 losses came by a single goal.
- Saarah Olten, who scored the lone goal against UMass Lowell, led the Sharks in scoring with eight goals and 18 points a season ago. Felicia King enters a graduate season after posting three goals and 10 points in 2022.
- Fleur Hofman recorded seven saves in three quarters of work against UMass Lowell to open the season, allowing two goals. Talia Seale recorded three saves with three goals allowed in the fourth quarter.
- Friday marks the first-ever meeting between Brown and LIU. The Sharks enter its fifth year as a Division I program in 2023.
- Holy Cross enters the weekend with a 1-0 overall record after taking a double overtime win over Stonehill to open the season. The Crusaders posted a 7-10 record in 2022.
- The Crusaders square off against the Northeastern Huskies on Friday (Sept. 1).
- Senior Katie Guden scored the lone goal against Stonehill. She finished fifth on the team in scoring in 2022. Additionally, Holy Cross returns its top-two scorers from 2022 in Meggan Fourie and Allie McDonough.
- Brooke Ross posted the shutout win to open the 2023 campaign after starting 16 games a season ago. Ross posted a .752 save percentage and 1.69 goals against average in 2022.
- Sunday marks the 37th meeting between Brown and Holy Cross in a series dating back to 1985. The Bears and Crusaders met annually from 1985-2019 and again in 2021.
- Brown holds a 25-11 series record against Holy Cross, including a 3-0 road win most recently in 2021.
- At home, Brown owns a 13-5 overall record have won three straight in the series.
