Field Hockey Opens Season with 3-0 Victory Over LIU

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown field hockey earned a 3-0 victory over LIU to start the season Friday afternoon at Goldberger Family Field.
Senior Lindsey Ross finished with a goal and an assist, while freshman Zoe Lawrence picked up the first goal of her career and sophomore Lexi Pellegrino scored as well.
"I'm very pleased with our performance today," said Head Coach Britt Broady. "Any time you get 20 shots in a game you're doing extremely well. Their goalkeeper played really well and kept us to three goals, but it could have been a six or seven-goal game."
Brown controlled the possession for the majority of the first quarter. After a number of penalty corner chances, Ross scored the first goal of the season off an assist from freshman Juliette Meijaard at the 5:50 mark.
Lawrence then picked up her first-career goal in a scrum in front of the cage after a rebound from the Sharks' goalkeeper to make it a 2-0 lead heading to the second quarter.
Brown then outshot LIU 6-1 in the second, but were not able to score as the game went into the half.
It only took 1:46 into the third quarter for the Bears to strike again. Pellegrino beat the goalkeeper to make it a 3-0 advantage. That score would stand for the remainder of the quarter and the game as the Bears finished with four shots to one for LIU in the fourth.
"We kept the pressure on from our front field to our back field and that's our strength," said Broady. "We're strong with our upperclassmen and freshmen so we will have a lot of depth this year and it's going to be an exciting team to watch develop in the coming games."
Brown is back in action at home on Sunday at 12 p.m. against Holy Cross.
