Men's Crew Finishes Sixth at IRA's; 1V8 Wins Petite Final

WEST WINDSOR, N.J. -Â Brown men's crew finished sixth at the 2023 IRA Championships after racing on Sunday on Lake Mercer in West Windsor, N.J.
Bruno's First Varsity 8 crossed the finish line in first place in the Petite Final, while the Second Varsity 8 (5:50.790) and Third Varsity 8 (5:54.540) were both were sixth in their Grand Finals.
"The team worked really hard and pushed each other all year long," said Head Coach Paul Cooke. "In the end the varsity had their best race of the year and turned around some results from earlier in the season. While it wasn't what we hoped, I was very pleased with the whole team. Everyone on the roster did a great job to push each other and as a result of that competition the varsity to had their best race of the season and the team finished sixth in the country."
"It will take some time to reflect on how we can do better. We will keep raising the standard as much as possible. There are lessons to be learned and possibilities that we will reflect on that will be important to help us get better in the future. We had our best races at the end of the year and we were able to take the setbacks and improve which was satisfying and exciting. We look forward to the challenges ahead to move us forward."
The Bears tallied 223 points in the team standings to finish sixth overall, five points ahead of seventh-place Dartmouth. Cal won the Championship with 288 points, while Washington finished second (273), and Yale (253), Princeton (236) and Harvard (233) rounded out the top five.
Brown's 1V8 raced to a time of 5:35.596 for the victory in the Petite Final. The crew got off to a fast start with Stanford (5:37.538) and trailed by less than a second after the first 1500 meters. Brown then took control in the final 500 meters and overtook the Stanford boat to win by two seconds.
The sixth-place team finish marks the 18th top-10 finish for the program since 2002.Â
