Women's Crew Places Seventh; A4 Takes Bronze at NCAA Championships

PENNSAUKEN, N.J. - Brown's First Varsity 4 started its Grand Final at the back of the pack before charging ahead in the final 500 meters to finish third and take home the bronze medal for the top finish of the NCAA Championships on Sunday. Bruno's Second Varsity 8 won the Petite Final for seventh place and the First Varsity 8 finished fourth in the Petite Final for 10th overall. As a team, Brown placed seventh for the second-straight year.
The Bears tallied 91 points in the team standings to finish seventh overall, one point shy of Penn for sixth place and two points ahead of eighth-place Cal. Winning the team National Championship for the second time in program history was Stanford, who also won the title in 2009.
Brown's top boat of the day was the A4, who finished third overall with a time of 7:11.870 to earn 20 points toward the team scoring. The Bears found themselves in last at the beginning of the race and stayed the course to gain ground. Bruno first passed sixth-place Princeton (7:22.050) after the first 1000 meters, then cruised by fifth-place Virginia (7:16.566) at 1500 meters, and finally edged fourth-place Stanford (7:12.716) in the final stretch. Winning the race was Texas (7:03.174), while Yale was second (7:06.900).
The 2V8 won the Petite Final with a time of 6:36.063 for 32 points in a tightly contested three-boat race where only 1.5 seconds separated first and third. Brown held the lead the for the entirety of the race, fending off second-place Ohio State (6:37.277) and third-place Penn (6:37.563).
Brown's 1V8 earned the Bears 39 points with a fourth-place finish in the Petite Final for 10th overall with a time of 6:34.026. Bruno was sandwiched between fourth-place Michigan (6:33.818) and fifth-place Virginia (6:34.030).
Stanford picked up 129 points to win the team championship with victories in the 1V8 and 2V8 Grand Final, while Texas was victorious in the A4 Grand Final.
All four teams from Ivy League finished in the top 10, while the Pac-12 had three programs in the top 10.
