Baseball Falls in Back-and-Forth Battle at Holy Cross

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Brown baseball team dropped its final non-league game of the season on Tuesday night, falling 13-10 in a wild back-and-forth matchup at Holy Cross. The Bears outhit the Crusaders 12-11, and the lead changed hands four times throughout the game.
Eight of Brown's nine starters reached base in the game, with freshman Mark Henshon going 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI, and sophomore Connor Cooke also tallied three hits. Freshman DJ Dillehay had two hits and three RBIs, and senior Ray Sass added two hits, two runs scored and two RBIs. Freshman Mika Petersen extended his on-base streak to 23 games with a pair of walks and a hit-by-pitch.
After a scoreless first two innings, both teams batted around and combined for 11 runs in the third inning.
After Brown loaded the bases with nobody out, Dillehay singled up the middle to plate two runs. After Jacob Burley moved the two runners along with a ground ball, Sass drove a two-out double to center field, and Cooke followed with an RBI single to score Sass and make it a 5-0 game.
The Crusaders came right back in the bottom of the inning, sending 10 men to the plate and scoring six times on just two hits to take a 6-5 lead, scoring four runs before recording an out. HC took advantage of four straight walks to open the inning and plated two runs on fielder's choices.
Holy Cross extended the lead to 7-5 in the home half of the fifth with a leadoff single by Jake McElroy, who later scored on a wild pitch.
Brown rallied to tie it up in the sixth on a pair of hits. Henshon and Derian Morphew started the frame with back-to-back doubles, and Dillehay later added an RBI groundout to score Morphew and tie the game.
Petersen, Dillehay and Burley teamed up to throw out the go-ahead run at the plate to end the sixth inning.
Brown retook the lead with two runs in the seventh with the help of some small ball. Ryan Marra singled up the middle leading off and advanced to third on a sac bunt by Sass, who reached on an error. Nathan Brasher and Henshon then followed with consecutive safety squeezes to plate Marra and Sass, respectively, and make it a 9-7 game.
The Crusaders got both runs back in the bottom of the seventh with back-to-back singles, and a double, all after two outs, to retie the score 9-9.
Holy Cross took the lead with four runs in the bottom of the eighth, all after two outs. After loading the bases with two walks and a hit-by-pitch, a bloop two-out single dropped into shallow center field for two runs, followed by a two-run error that made it 13-9.
Brown fought back for a run in the ninth as Marra led off with a hit by pitch and later scored on a ground ball by Brasher.
The Bears will round out the 2023 regular season this weekend with a three-game series at Princeton. The first two games are set for a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 11:30 a.m. on ESPN+.
