4/30/2023 7:37:00 PM | Women's Crew
WORCESTER, Mass. – No. 5 Brown women's crew captured four Grand Final victories at the 48th annual Eastern Sprints on Lake Quinsigamond to win the points trophy for the 12th time since 1990 and the Varsity 8 title for the 10th time since 1988.
The teams competing battled rainy conditions in Worcester.
Brown won each of its morning heats to begin the day. Then, in the Grand Finals, it was the First Varsity 8, Second Varsity 8, Third Varsity 8 and First Varsity 4 earning respective wins.
"We retained the varsity eight trophy and the points trophy today at the Eastern Sprints Championships," said John Murphy, the Loyalty Chair for women's crew. "Every boat medaled in what was a true team effort against what proved to be extremely tough competition."
The Bears were first in each morning heat beginning with the A4 (7:09.640), which was over 13 seconds ahead of second-place Columbia. Next was the 1V8 (6:18.570) which was over eight seconds ahead of Northeastern. Brown's 2V8 (6:26.560) was 11 seconds faster than Columbia, while the 3V8 (6:43.410) finished nine seconds faster than Michigan State, and the B4 (7:13.420) won a closer race with a two-second margin in front of second-place Columbia.
All five boats qualified for the Grand Final, while the C4 was set to compete in its Grand Final as well.
The 1V8 was pushed by a strong Syracuse boat and raced to a winning time of 6:14.440, ahead of the Orange 1V8 of 6:15.820. Rutgers (6:21.940), Columbia (6:25.490), Radcliffe (6:27.680) and Northeastern (6:33.480) took the final four spots.
Brown's 2V8 held off Syracuse once again for the win, clocking 6:25.430, over five seconds ahead of the Orange (631.180). Following Brown and 'Cuse were Radcliffe (6:37.040), Rutgers (6:40.000), Columbia (6:42.720) and Boston University (6:48.410).
It was Brown over Syracuse in the 3V8 as well. The Bears finished with a time of 6:37.640, while the Orange were second at 6:43.590. The next four boats to finish were Northeastern (6:44.000), Rutgers (6:47.910), Columbia (6:47.980) and Michigan State (6:52.270).
