Baseball Takes Senior Day Split with Dartmouth
4/29/2023 7:00:00 PM | Baseball
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – A four-run seventh inning rally helped the Brown baseball team take down Dartmouth by a score of 4-3 in game one, but the Big Green rebounded in game two, holding off Brown by a score of 2-1 to earn a Saturday doubleheader split on Senior Day at Attanasio Family Field at Murray Stadium.
Senior Derian Morphew went 3-for-4 in each game out of the leadoff spot. Senior Ryan Marra had two hits, including the game-winning two-run single in the seventh inning of game one.
Freshman Mika Petersen went 4-for-8 on the day, extending his hitting streak to 20 games and on-base streak to 22 games, and moving up two spots to No. 2 in the Ivy League in batting average.
Senior catcher Jacob Burley caught two runners trying to steal second, and picked a runner off second base in game one.
On the mound, sophomore Jack Seppings picked up the win in game one with 4.0 strong innings of relief with four strikeouts. Game two starter Bobby Olsen went 6.2 innings, allowing just two earned runs on three hits and six strikeouts.
Between games of the doubleheader, Brown honored its six-member senior class of 2023 with an on-field ceremony.
GAME ONE
After Brown stranded the bases loaded in the bottom of the first, Dartmouth picked up two hits and used a double steal attempt to score a runner from third in the top of the second.
Dartmouth loaded the bases with nobody out in the sixth inning. Seppings then came in from the bullpen and promptly induced a double play and a strikeout to end the inning, with a run coming in the back door from third base on the double play to make it a 2-0 game.
Brown's offense finally broke through in the seventh inning for four runs on five hits to take the lead they would not relinquish. Jared Johnson led off with a single and scored two batters later on a single by Morphew to open the scoring. After a single by Petersen, DJ Dillehay tied the game with a single to left center. Two batters later, Marra delivered what proved to be the game-winning hit with a two-strike knock to the opposite field to plate Burley and Petersen and make it a 4-2 Brown lead.
Dartmouth got one back in the eighth with a leadoff triple and sacrifice fly, but Seppings struck out the side in order in the ninth to lock down the win.
GAME TWO
Brown outhit Dartmouth 6-4 in the second game. Dartmouth used a leadoff walk, steal and RBI single to take a 1-0 lead in the first inning. In the second inning, Logan Meusy, Dillehay and Burley teamed up to throw out a runner at the plate to end the inning on a double into the left field corner.
Petersen led off the fourth inning with a triple down the right field line, but was stranded. Morphew struck for a big two-out single for a run in the fifth, scoring Johnson from second base to tie the game.
Olsen went the first 6.2 innings and departed in a tied game, but Dartmouth struck for the winning run against the Bears' bullpen with a two-out, bases loaded hit-by-pitch.
Brown will travel to face Holy Cross in Worcester on Tuesday evening in their final non-league tilt of the season. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. on ESPN+.
