Men's Lacrosse Drops Ocean State Cup Battle at Bryant
4/25/2023 10:30:00 PM | Men's Lacrosse
SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Brown Bears (5-8, 1-4 Ivy League) cut into Bryant's lead in the second half, but it was not enough as the Bryant Bulldogs (10-3, 4-1 America East) captured the Ocean State Cup with a 17-12 home win over the Bears Tuesday night at Beirne Stadium.
"It's another frustrating and disappointing loss," said head coach Mike Daly. "Again, that's on the head coach, I feel like I let this team down. We have to be better in all phases of the game and credit to Bryant, they played hard, they played efficient, and they made a lot of early plays to put us in that hole; but you can't do that against good teams and we have nothing but respect for Bryant.
"We gave them too much early and it's a pretty big challenge to get out of a hole like that against a good team."
Devon and Aidan McLane scored consecutive goals early in the opening quarter to turn a 1-0 deficit into a 2-1 lead. The Bulldogs responded with three straight goals before Wells Bligh ended the run with his first of the game with 6:25 remaining in the first.
Mason Drouin added the final goal of the quarter for Bryant to give the home team a 5-3 lead through 15 minutes.
Samari Staten recorded his first collegiate goal early in the second quarter to bring the Bears within a goal. Staten's marker was assisted by Trevor Yeboah-Kodie.
The Bulldogs responded with three straight goals to push the lead to four before Griffin King ended the scoring run with his 14th goal of the season to give Bryant an 8-5 halftime lead.
Jacob Alexander extended Bryant's lead 13 seconds into the third quarter to make it a four-goal game.
Griffin King pushed his point streak to 18 games with a man-up tally with 13:14 remaining in the third quarter. But the Bulldogs responded with a three-goal run to double up on the Bears with a 12-6 lead.
Wells Bligh added his second of the night with 2:01 remaining in the third to stop the Bulldog run.
The Bears struck for two man-up goals in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter to make it 12-9 Bryant. Devon McLane struck with 13:25 remaining before assisting on Trevor Glavin's first goal of the game with 12:01 remaining.
Jack Kelly joined the scoring and struck for two goals in 51 seconds to bring the Bears within one with 9:10 remaining. Kelly's first tally was assisted by Aidan McLane.
Bryant ended the five-goal Bruno run as Johnny and Timmy Hackett both found the back of the net with the other assisting on the goal to push the lead back to three at 14-11.
King added his second of the game with 2:26 remaining to bring the Bears back within two, but the Bulldogs added three in the final minutes for the 17-12 win.
Brown closes the 2023 campaign on Saturday, April 29 with a trip to Hanover, New Hampshire to take on the Dartmouth Big Green (6-5, 1-4 Ivy League). Saturday's game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. and will stream on ESPN+.
