PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown softball dropped both games of a doubleheader on Saturday to Dartmouth. The Bears staged a strong comeback in the second game, bringing the tying run to the plate but came up short.
GAME 1: Dartmouth 4, Brown 0
The Bears managed just five hits, with two coming from Dara English, and left nine runners on base as they fell 4-0 in game one of the doubleheader with the Big Green.
Brown had chances in the first two innings getting two runners on in the first two innings but both times the Bears were kept off the board.
The first runs of the game came in the top of the fourth on a two-run home run by Kate Farren to put Dartmouth up 2-0. Farren added a solo home run in the top of the sixth.
Brown left two runners on base in the fifth and had another chance in the sixth. Jasmine Hsiao walked with one out and English doubled to the wall in left to put runners on second and third. Two batters later, a walk loaded the bases but Nikki Tanguay's hard liner was snagged at first base to end the inning.
A single in the top of the seventh with two outs brought in Dartmouth's fourth run in the top of the seventh.
Alexis Guevara threw 6.2 innings, striking out four batters.
GAME 2
Dartmouth got off to a hot start against starter Jodie Aguirre with a three-run home run in the top of the first. The Big Green doubled its lead with three runs in the second, chasing Aguirre from the game.
Brown's first run of the game came in the bottom of the second. Walks to Moe Kastens and Meghan Gormley put runners on first and second and Liv Kam hit a single up the middle off her sister Izzy Kam, Dartmouth's starter, to bring home Kastens.
Dartmouth jumped ahead again with three runs in the top of the fourth and another in the fifth to go up 10-1.
Brown avoided the run rule loss with five runs in the bottom of the fifth. The first run came on a single by English to score Alexander. A single by Moody and walk by Cristina Barbella loaded the bases and the second run of the inning came on a walk by Hsiao. Julia Gubner singled home Brianna Rodriguez and a groundout by Nikki Tanguay scored Barbella to make it 10-5. A wild pitch brought home Hsiao for the final run of the inning.
The Bears added another run in the bottom of the sixth after Alexander reached on an error and scored on a single to the corner in left.
Dartmouth responded with three more runs in the top of the seventh.
Cameron Zytkewicz Ray, pinch hitting with two outs in the seventh, hit the first home run of her career with a blast to left field. The Bears made it interesting, loading the bases on back-to-back walks after a single by Kam but English flew out to left to end the game.
