4/15/2023 6:43:00 PM | Baseball
Freshman Dylan Reid tossed a season-long 6.2 innings of relief and racked up a career-high 11 strikeouts in the opener for the Bears. Senior Bobby Olsen followed in game two with a virtually identical line of 6.2 innings, allowing two earned runs on a career-high 11 strikeouts.
Senior Derian Morphew went 3-for-8 at the plate with three RBIs and freshman Mika Petersen picked up one hit in each game to extend his hitting streak to 15 games.
For Penn, game two was dominated on the mound by Ryan Dromboski, who allowed just three hits in the complete game effort. He surrendered just one hit and faced the minimum through the first 8.1 innings.
GAME 1
The Quakers started fast in game one and never looked back, putting at least two runs on the board in four of the first five innings. Overall, the Bears left 10 runners on base in the first game while Penn stranded 11.
Penn put up three runs in the first inning to take the early lead on a pair of one-out walks, and a double and triple with two outs. Penn tacked on three more runs on four hits and a pair of walks in the second to push the lead to 6-0, highlighted by a two-run triple.
The lead moved to 8-0 in the fourth with a pair of two-out walks and two-out hits.
Brown started the fourth inning with a pair of singles and a walk to load the bases with nobody out, but was unable to score. Penn came back with three runs in the fifth inning on a three-run homer by Wyatt Henseler.
The Bears got on the board with a big six-run outburst on six hits in the eighth inning. Starting with the top of the order, Brown strung together four consecutive hits to start the inning, including an RBI single by Petersen and RBI knock by Conor Cooke in his first at bat of the day. After a fielder's choice, Reece Rappoli lined a single to score DJ Dillehay to make it an 11-4 game and reload the bases. Gunner Boree then drew a walk for an RBI and three batters later, Morphew drove in two with his second hit of the inning up the middle to cut it to 11-6.
Penn tacked on two runs on two hits in the ninth to bring the final score to 13-6.
GAME 2
Penn struck early once again with two runs in the first inning, putting the first four runners on base and used four walks and a hit by pitch to build a 2-0 lead. Olsen entered with the bases loaded and one out and induced an inning-ending double play to end the frame.
Penn extended the lead to 4-0 with solo homers in the third and seventh innings. Olsen was strong throughout the rest of his outing, striking out the side in the sixth.
Petersen delivered a one-out single for the Bears in the first inning for the team's only baserunner until the ninth inning, as Dromboski set down the next 23 Bears in a row until Ryan Marra singled with one down in the ninth.
After Charles Crawford was hit by a pitch, Morphew stepped in and singled to right field to plate Marra with Brown's only run, before consecutive flyouts ended the game.
Brown will continue its seven game homestand next Saturday at 11:30 a.m. with an Ivy League doubleheader against Harvard.
