4/22/2023 7:32:00 PM | Baseball
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – A walk-off single by freshman shortstop DJ Dillehay capped a three-run ninth inning in game two and lifted the Brown baseball team to a doubleheader split with Harvard on Saturday afternoon.
The Crimson took game one 4-1, before the Bears rallied in the nightcap with four singles in the ninth, with all four runs and seven of Brown's nine hits coming over the final two innings in the 4-3 win.
Sophomore Jack Seppings earned the win after throwing a scoreless ninth inning. Game two starter Santhosh Gottam struck out six and allowed just two earned runs over 6.0 innings. Freshman Mika Petersen had two hits in each game (4-for-9) to push his hitting streak to 17 games and his on-base streak to 19 games. Dillehay added two hits and three RBIs in the nightcap.
GAME ONE
Starter Paxton Meyers went 6.0 innings in his third start of the season for Brown allowing three earned runs on four hits with five strikeouts. Harvard took advantage of five walks in the game and four Brown errors to score two unearned runs.
Harvard used a leadoff single and a throwing error in the second inning to take a 1-0 lead. Two walks and a single loaded the bases with one out in the fourth before Zach Brown singled up the middle for two runs to make it a 3-0 game.
Brown got on the board with a run in the fifth inning, starting with a two-out single by Petersen. After a wild pitch and a walk, Burley lined a two-strike single into center field to score Petersen from second and make it a 3-1 ballgame.
The Crimson added an insurance run in the top of the seventh, scoring an unearned run when a dropped fly ball led to a sac fly.
Callan Fang struck out seven Bears over 3.0 innings of one-hit relief to lock down the save.
GAME TWO
Harvard struck early again in game two with a run in the first inning after a pair of singles and a wild pitch. They tacked on another run in the fifth with a leadoff walk, and an RBI single to left field with one out to push it to 2-0. One more run scored in the eighth inning following a leadoff double and sac fly to give the Crimson a 3-0 lead.
Brown stranded five runners on base in the fifth and sixth innings without scoring and managed just one hit through the first six innings before breaking through against the bullpen.
Brown manufactured a run in the eighth inning with three consecutive singles to start the frame from Derian Morphew, Petersen and an RBI single from Dillehay to make it 3-1.
In the bottom of the ninth, Jared Johnson and Ray Sass started the rally with singles and Nathan Brasher was hit by a pitch to load the bases with nobody out. After a pop out, Morphew legged out an infield single that scored Johnson, making it 3-2. After a strikeout for the second out of the inning, Dillehay stepped in and fell behind 1-2 before grounding a ball back through the middle and into center field, plating Morphew and Brasher to give Brown its first walk off win of the season.

QUOTES FROM THE COACH: GRANT ACHILLES
- "Harvard's pitchers did a great job against us today. It was tough to get anything going against them and they came through with big pitches when they needed to. DJ came through for us when the game was on the line, and credit to the guys ahead of him to set the table. Those were relentless at bats against one of their top arms."
- "Santhosh did a great job of pitching to contact. He was really effective today and I think he gave us six strong innings. Bobby Olsen did a great job keeping us in the game and gave it to Sepp, who held the line there when it was a two-run game. That was a really important job for them and a really important team win."
