PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown baseball team brought the winning run to the plate in the bottom of the ninth, but Penn was able to hold on for a 6-4 series-opening victory on Friday afternoon at Attanasio Family Field at Murray Stadium.
The Bears put at least one runner on base in all nine innings, and at least two men on in seven innings, while stranding 15 runners. All nine starters reached base with seven recording base hits, including two hits apiece Derian Morphew, Mika Petersen, Jacob Burley, Nathan Brasher and Mark Henshon.
Morphew reached base four times. Burley reached three times with two RBIs to extended his on-base streak to 21 games, and threw out two runners attempting to steal.
Making his second-career start on the mound, junior Paxton Meyers set a new career-high with nine strikeouts over 6.0 innings, tying his career-long for innings pitched and allowing three earned runs on six hits.
Penn's first three runs were all scored by men who reached on walks, with their last three runs coming on three throwing errors in the seventh inning.
Penn struck for a pair of runs in the top of the first inning after two walks and two singles that found their ways through holes on the right and left side of the infield. The Quakers added another run after a walk and two-out single in the third.
Penn put runners on second and third with one out in the sixth before Meyers battled back and got back-to-back strikeouts to end the inning and cap his outing.
Penn batted around to double its lead with three unearned runs without the benefit of a hit in the seventh inning off three Brown throwing errors, two walks and a hit by pitch to hold a 6-0 lead at the seventh inning stretch.
The Bears finally broke through in the seventh inning and got three runs back on three hits. After loading the bases with nobody out, Burley sent a single through the left side the score Henshon and Petersen to get Brown on the board. With two outs, Brasher drew a catcher's interference call to score DJ Dillehay to make it a 6-3 ballgame.
The Bears put runners on second and third in bottom of the eighth, but had a runner cut down at the plate and stranded two more without scoring. After two quick outs in the bottom of the ninth, the Bears made some noise as Charles Crawford came off the bench for a pinch hit double. Ryan Marra added an infield single and Henshon followed by lacing a single through the right side to plate Crawford and bring the winning run to the plate before a fly out ended the game.
Brown and Penn will wrap up their series tomorrow afternoon on Alzheimer's Awareness Day at Murray Stadium. First pitch of game one of the doubleheader is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. on ESPN+.

QUOTES FROM THE COACH: GRANT ACHILLES
- "We had a ton of opportunities and it can be easy to get down on yourselves, but we kept creating opportunities and having tough at bats, and even in the last inning, (Crawford) did a great job of getting the fire going. I'm really proud of how we battled back on the offensive side."
- "It took Paxton a little bit to locate his slider the way he's capable of, but when he didn't have it, he was still competitive and bearing down."
- "Physical mistakes are going to happen and they seemed to happen at the worst possible time today, all back-to-back-to-back. The encouraging part is if we played a clean game, we win. The discouraging part is we didn't play a clean game. I'm proud of how we finished today and that's the momentum that we can build on."
