ATLANTA – Brown softball (2-7) dropped games to Southern Miss (14-3) and Georgia Tech (11-8) on Sunday to finish play over the weekend.
Brown was done in by two tough half innings in each game.
Game 1: Southern Miss 6, Brown 3
The Bears finished with six hits and Brown got a stellar outing from Alexis Guevara, but four errors doomed the Bears in the loss to Southern Miss.
Southern Miss homered to leadoff the bottom of the second but Brown was quick to respond. Nicole Kim singled with two outs and Meghan Gormley followed with a two-run home run to put the Bears ahead.
Doubles by Dara English and Laurel Moody in the fourth increased Brown's lead to 3-1.
Meanwhile, Guevara was dealing, sitting down 10-straight batters until one out in the bottom of the fifth. After a single and a pop out, Brown committed an error on the next three at bats, which allowed four runs to score for the Golden Eagles. The fifth run of the inning came on a home run to center field.
Brown would get one single in the top of the sixth but that would be the last baserunner for the Bears.
Despite picking up the loss, Guevara (1-3) finished with only one earned run allowed on five hits and picked up seven strikeouts.
Game 2: Georgia Tech 6, Brown 0
A five-run bottom of the sixth broke open what was a tight game between Brown and Georgia Tech. The Bears got hits from four different batters but Brown left six runners on base.
Georgia Tech got the scoring going in the first on a two-out solo home run off starter Annie Finch (0-2). Over the next four innings, Finch stranded six Yellow Jackets while keeping the Bears down by one.
Brown's offense could not take advantage of Finch's performance as the Bears picked up just one hit in the first inning and one in the fifth. Both times the runner was stranded at first.
The Bears' best chance came in the sixth as Guevara and Gormley singled to put runners on the corners. After a foul out, Gormley took second to put two runners on scoring position, but a strikeout ended the inning.
Georgia Tech broke the game open in the sixth with a two-out single scoring two runs and a three-run home run two batters later to push the score to 6-0.
Brown got two runners on with back-to-back walks to start the seventh but Brown could not get a run across.
