3/4/2023 8:43:00 PM | Softball
ATLANTA – Brown softball (2-4) split a doubleheader against Georgia State (7-12) on Saturday. The Bears took game one 5-1 before falling 8-0 in game two.

Game 1: Brown 5, Georgia State 1
The Bears got a gem from starter Alexis Guevara (1-2), who threw a complete game, allowing one run on three hits and five strikeouts. Six different Bears picked up hits for the offense in the win.

Brown got the scoring going in the second with one out as Julia Gubner singled and moved to third on a double by Guevara down the left field line. After Jasmine Hsiao was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Moe Kastens drove in Gubner with a sacrifice fly.

The Bears' next baserunner came in the fifth when Hsiao doubled to lead off the inning. Hsiao moved to third after groundout and with two outs, Dara English singled up the middle to score Hsiao.

In the seventh, Hsiao walked and Kastens singled with one out. Nikki Tanguay reached on an error to load the bases and English drove in Brown's third run on a sac fly. Liv Kam pinch hit in the next at bat and singled up the middle to score two more as Brown pushed its lead to 5-0.

Georgia State would get its first run of the game in the bottom of the seventh on a home run but that was all the Panthers would muster.

Game 2: Georgia State 8, Brown 0 (6 innings)
Game two was much different for the Bears as Georgia State scored four runs in the first and Brown could not come up with a clutch hit, falling in six innings to the Panthers.

Georgia State chased starter Erin Elgas (0-1) from the game in two thirds of an inning, scoring four runs on four hits and a walk.

Brown loaded the bases with two outs in the second after back-to-back singles by Cameron Zytkewicz Ray and Tanguay, but a strikeout ended the threat. The Bears got two more runners on base in the third with one out but back-to-back flyouts stranded two more runners.

For the third-straight inning, Brown threatened as Zytkewicz Ray was hit by a pitch, Tanguay singled and Jadey Hagiwara walked to load the bases with no outs. Looking to cut into the 4-0 lead the next two batters struck out and a flyout left the bases loaded.

The fifth inning saw another chance for the Bears as Hsiao doubled with one out and Laurel Moody was hit by a pitch in the next at bat. After a strikeout, Tanguay singled to center but Hsiao was thrown out at the plate to end the inning.

Georgia State finally got the reliever Annie Finch, who had held the Panthers off the board for three innings. The Panthers hit a three-run homerun with one out to push the lead to 7-0. After the Bears went scoreless in the top of the sixth, Georgia State hit a walkoff home run in the bottom of the sixth.
