Softball Heads to Atlanta for Weekend Tournament

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown softball returns to action over the weekend with six games from Friday (March 3) to Sunday (March 5). The Bears will be playing in the I-75 Challenge around Atlanta.
Brown will begin the weekend with a doubleheader at Georgia State on Friday beginning at 1 p.m. On Saturday, Brown will head to Kennesaw State for a doubleheader against the Owls with first pitch set for 1 p.m. The Bears will close out the weekend at Georgia Tech on Sunday. Brown will play Southern Miss at 10 a.m. before playing the host Yellow Jackets at 12:30 p.m.
The doubleheader at Kennesaw State will be streamed on the KSU Owl Network. Brown's game against Georgia Tech will be streamed on ACC Network Extra.
ABOUT BROWN (1-4)
- Brown finished the first weekend of the season 1-4 at the Auburn Plainsman Invitational. The Bears earned a 7-5 win over Merrimack to start the weekend.
- Dara English had a strong weekend at the plate for the Bears, hitting .500 in the five games with a double and three RBI. English had three RBI off the bench in the season-opening win against Merrimack.
- Meghan Gormley was tied with English with six hits on the weekend, with the North Kingstown, R.I., native collecting two doubles and a triple. Gormley also had three RBI.
- Laurel Moody had Brown's only home run of the weekend and finished with three hits, including a double, and two RBI. Moody was tied with Niki Kim with three runs scored to lead the team.
- Brown was perfect on the base paths, going 3-for-3 in stolen base attempts. Kim was 2-for-2 and Leah Carey was 1-for-1.
- In the circle, Erin Elgas allowed just three runs over 7.1 innings pitched for a team-best 2.86 ERA. Alexis Guevara threw a team-high 10.1 innings and collected nine strikeouts. Annie Finch also had nine strikeouts in just 5.1 innings pitched.
ABOUT GEORGIA STATE (7-11)
- Georgia State is 7-11 on the season and has won its last two games. The Panthers beat Alabama State on the road in a midweek matchup the last time they took the field.
- Georgia State's last five victories have all been by one run.
- Bailee Richardson is leading Georgia State with a .396 average, four doubles, five home runs and 18 RBI. Chloe Nadler is second on the team with four home runs and is tied with Jaycee Goodwin with seven RBI.
- In the circle, the Panthers have a team ERA of 5.69. Three pitchers have shared equal time in the circle. Hallie Adams holds a team-best 4.83 ERA and has 31 strikeouts in 33.1 innings pitched.
- This will be the third time Brown has played Georgia State. The Bears lost both meetings to the Panthers back in 2000.
ABOUT KENNESAW STATE (5-10)
- Kennesaw State will play Northern Iowa and Southern Miss on Thursday and Friday before playing the Bears in a doubleheader on Saturday.
- The Owls are riding back-to-back wins including a 5-3 at No. 11/7 Alabama. Before the win over the Crimson Tide, KSU had lost five-straight games.
- Kennesaw State is hitting .222 as a team, led by Brinaya Bailey with a .295 average. The Owls have hit four home runs in 15 games this season. Kiera Cooper leads the team with two and has a team-best eight RBI.
- Kenley Hilleray leads the team with a 2.33 ERA. Melanie Bennett has made a team-high nine starts and has a 3-2 record with 38 strikeouts in 39.1 innings.
- This is the first meeting between Brown and Kennesaw State.
ABOUT SOUTHERN MISS
- Southern Miss is 12-2 on the season having dropped a 5-0 contest to No. 9 Alabama on Wednesday night.
- The Golden Eagles are 12-1 at home and will be playing their first weekend on the road this season.
- Southern Miss is hitting .268 as a team with Jana Lee leading the way at .385.
- Both Hannah Borden and Natalie Taylor have three home runs to lead the team. Borden and Lee each have 12 RBI.
- Southern Miss has outscored its opponents 76-26 this season with all three pitchers having a sub-2.15 ERA. Morgan Leinstock holds a 1.30 ERA in 48.1 innings. Leinstock has a 5-2 record with 58 strikeouts.
- Brown has played Southern Miss twice, losing both matchups back in 1987.
ABOUT GEORGIA TECH (8-8)
- Georgia Tech is 8-8 this season and have lost two-straight games coming into the weekend. The Yellow Jackets will play Northern Iowa twice and Southern Miss before closing out its weekend against Brown.

- This will be the second-ever meeting with Georgia Tech. Brown earned a 5-3 win over the Yellow Jackets back in 2000.
