NEW ORLEANS - The Brown baseball team brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth inning, but their late rally fell short as the Bears dropped game two of a three game series to New Orleans 9-5 on Saturday afternoon.
Â
Gunner Boree reached base four times via a single and three walks, while adding a run, RBI and steal. Jacob Burley went 1-for-3 with a pair of walks and a run scored, and Jared Johnson added a pinch hit two-run single in his lone at bat.
Â
Freshman Carter Rasmussen turned in a strong 3.0 innings of relief, striking out seven while allowing one run on two hits.
Â
UNO jumped out to an 8-0 lead through the first three innings, scoring two unearned runs in the first, tacking on three more in the second on four hits, and three in the third on three hits. They made it 9-0 in the sixth on a single and RBI double to start the inning.
Â
Brown managed to get just two hits of UNO starter Brandon Mitchell, who struck out 11 and allowed just two walks over 7.0 innings, returning eight Brown batters in a row on two separate occasions.
Â
After getting into the bullpen, Brown roared to life and scored five runs in the eighth inning, starting when they used a single and two walks to load the bases with nobody out. Boree drew a bases loaded walk to get Brown on the board, and Reece Rappoli followed with a sac fly to center field to plate Ray Sass with the second run. Brasher added an RBI ground out, and three batters later, Johnson was called upon to pinch hit and lined a two-run single to right center field to score Boree and Burley to make it a 9-5 game.
Â
Jack Seppings tossed a scoreless eighth inning of relief before the Bears threatened once again in the top of the ninth. With one out, Morphew and Boree drew back-to-back walks and Rappoli singled through the left side to load the bases with one out to bring the tying run to the plate. After a pitching change, UNO got the final two outs on four pitches to slam the door.
Â
Brown and UNO will close out their three game weekend series on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. ET on ESPN+.
