NEW ORLEANS – The Brown baseball team dropped the final game of its three-game series at New Orleans on Sunday afternoon, falling by a final score of 5-1.
The Bears' offense picked up its first home run of the season, but managed just three hits on the afternoon. Sophomore shortstop Gunner Boree reached base twice via a single and a walk and has now reached base in six straight games. Senior catcher Jacob Burley was 1-for-3 with a solo homer.
On the mound, freshman Dylan Reid turned in 5.0 innings in his second start of the season, allowing three runs on four hits with one walk and three strikeouts.
Brown got on the board first in the second inning when Burley jumped on the first pitch and launched it over the left field wall for to give the Bears the early 1-0 lead.
The Privateers came right back and tied it in the bottom of the inning on a leadoff double and one-out single. They took the lead the following inning on a hit by pitch, two singles and a sac fly to hold a 3-1 advantage.
Jared Johnson made a spectacular diving catch in left center field to end the fourth inning, and Burley caught a runner stealing second with a strong throw to end the fifth.
UNO tacked on single runs in the sixth on a solo home run, and the seventh with a sac fly to score an unearned run and push the lead to 5-1.
Offensively Brown, drew three walks on the day and never went more than six batters in a row without a baserunner, but couldn't muster another hit until the seventh inning. The Bears stranded two runners in both the sixth and seventh innings and were unable to score.
Brown will travel to Cary, N.C. next weekend for a four-game series against Penn State, meeting the Nittany Lions on Friday-Sunday.
