Softball Splits Doubleheader With Princeton as Hsiao Shines for Bears

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown softball (4-13, 2-4 Ivy) split two games with Princeton (9-13, 5-1 Ivy) on Sunday as the Bears and Tigers closed out their three-game series.
Jasmine Hsiao shined for the Bears in the two games, finishing the day with three hits, two home runs and four runs driven in.
Alexis Guevara was stellar in the circle for the Bears, throwing a complete game shutout in the opener to earn her third win of the season.
"We knew Jas had that in her," said head coach Kate Wheeler. "Pitchers kept us in the game all weekend. Defense did a terrific job all weekend. It just came down to who gets the timely hit and we were right in there with the defending champs. I think we can carry that for the rest of the season and I look forward to Harvard next weekend."
GAME 1: BROWN 4, PRINCETON 0
Hsiao delivered for Brown, driving in all four runs, including her third and fourth home runs of the season as the Bears shutout Princeton to start the day.
Guevara earned the win in the circle, throwing seven innings, allowing just three hits, one walk and striking out six batters.
Brown got to Princeton starter Alexis Laudenslager early, loading the bases in the first but could not get a run across. That changed in the second as the Cameron Zytkewicz Ray reached on an infield single with one out. After a groundout, Leah Carey entered to run at second and scored as Hsiao doubled to right center.
Princeton put runners on the corners with one out and had two in scoring position with two outs but Guevara froze the next batter for a strikeout to end the inning.
In the fourth, Zytkewicz Ray reached on another infield single with one out and two batters later, Hsiao hit a deep ball over the right center field fence to put Brown up 3-0.
The lead remained 3-0 until the bottom of the sixth when Hsiao lined one into Brown's bullpen past the left field fence for a solo home run.
That was all the offense the Bears need as Guevara locked down Princeton, retiring the final nine batters she faced.
GAME 2: PRINCETON 5, BROWN 2
Princeton scored first in the second game of the day with a solo home run off Annie Finch in the first inning but the Bears bounced back taking advantage of two errors by the Tigers in the first two innings.
Brown scored its first run in the bottom of the first after a ground ball by Laurel Moody to third looked to have Hsiao caught between second and third. A throwing error saw the ball bounce into center field and Hsiao came around to score to tie the game.
In the second, Zytkewicz Ray singled up the middle and a misplayed ball by the center fielder allowed the Brown second baseman to motor to third. Two batters later, Zytkewicz Ray scored on a sac fly by Liv Kam.
Princeton took the lead back with two runs in the fourth and grabbed another two in the top of the seventh making it 5-2 heading to Brown's last at bat.
Lily Berlinger picked up her first-career hit to start the seventh with a hard liner to left but was doubled off first in the next at bat after a rocket by Kam was caught at third, ending Brown's chance for a comeback.
