2/25/2023 11:30:00 PM | Men's Ice Hockey
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown Bears (9-17-3, 5-14-3 ECAC) skated to a 2-2 tie with the Colgate Raiders (14-15-5, 11-8-3 ECAC) to close out the regular season on Senior Night at Meehan Auditorium Saturday.
"I thought the guys responded from the game on Friday where we didn't have our best effort and I thought we gave ourselves an opportunity to win," said head coach Brendan Whittet '94. "The response was necessary and good to see as we're trying to play as well as we can as we enter the playoffs."
Mathieu Caron (33 saves) was stellar from the start and recorded 15 saves in a scoreless opening frame.
Jordan Tonelli tallied his sixth goal of the season 4:46 into the second period to give the Bears the 1-0 lead. Tonelli wired a wrist shot from the slot to beat Colgate goaltender Carter Gylander (25 saves) after collected a pass from Ryan Bottrill.
Jonny Russell doubled the Bruno lead at 9:56 of the frame on an odd-man rush with Ryan Shostak. Russell moved the puck to Shostak, who quickly sent it back to the senior for the quick strike goal. Luke Krys picked up the secondary assist on the goal.
Ethan Manderville cut into Brown's lead with a power play goal at 12:32 of the second with assists going to Nick Anderson and Alex Young.
The Raiders tied the game at 16:15 of the frame as Matt Verboon deflected a point shot past Caron with assists to Ross Mitton and Reid Irwin.
Both teams tightened defensively in a scoreless third period with Brown holding a 7-6 edge in shots.
The Bears went on the power play just 28 seconds into the 3-on-3 overtime period as Alex Young was whistled for hooking. The Bears dominated play during the advantage and throughout the extra period, but were unable to beat Gylander.
Caron preserved a tie with a breakaway save on Mitton as time expired in overtime, Colgate's first shot of the five-minute period.
Verboon was the lone shootout scorer to give the Raiders the extra point.
Following the game, Brown honored its 10-member Class of 2023 on Senior Night.
"They're selfless and all leaders in their own right. They're good people and people I like to be around; they're team-first and do everything in their power to help Brown when we step on the ice and put on the uniform to perform," Whittet added on the senior class. "I'm really going to miss them."
