Men's Hockey Falls to Clarkson in ECAC First Round Game
3/4/2023 7:13:00 PM | Men's Ice Hockey
POTSDAM, N.Y. – The Brown Bears fell in the ECAC First Round to the Clarkson Golden Knights to close out the 2022-23 season Saturday evening at Cheel Arena.
"It's obviously not the ending to the year that we wanted but I do think, definitively, we took a step forward this year, said head coach Brendan Whittet '94. "Again, we're not where we want to be in terms of overall record but we took some steps. It was a better team game; we had a little bit more offense.
"We went through a lot of injuries and injuries to key players – including our goaltender – and it wasn't easy after that but the positive is that I think we got better and like anything – losing stinks, it absolutely stinks, it's like a stake through the heart. It stinks when you get eliminated, there's nothing worse.
"I'm proud of the seniors, they faced a lot of adversity in missing a whole year to the pandemic and it hasn't been easy to come back from that. They left it on the ice, it was not our night and that's athletics. We will learn from it and be better. We are going a Championship and my hope is that it's next year.
"We have high expectations for the guys coming back and they're going to work, and work, and work. And they're going to fulfill their potential and their expectations."
Clarkson took the lead 6:51 into the first as Noah Beck found the back of the net with assists from Alex Campbell and Jordan Power.
Mathieu Caron (29 saves) was stellar from the start and finished the opening period with 14 saves.
Anthony Romano doubled Clarkson's lead 5:31 into the second frame with assists from Anthony Callin and Dustyn McFaul.
Brown got its first power play chance with 1:54 remaining in the second, but the Clarkson defense and goaltender Ethan Haider (26 saves) kept the offense at bay.
Jordan Tonelli made it a one-goal game just 22 seconds into the third period with assists from Gavin Puskar and Ryan Bottrill. Quick puck movement from below the goal line got the puck to Puskar, who found Tonelli on the far post with a pass across the top of the crease.
Romano scored his second of the game 4:34 into the third to give the Golden Knights a two-goal lead.
Brown pulled Caron with 3:03 remaining in search of a pair of goals to force overtime. With 38.6 seconds remaining, Brian Richardson found the empty net to make it a 4-1 game.
Clarkson added a power play goal at 19:48 of the third to make it 5-1.
