PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown women's basketball used a strong second half to push past the University of Pennsylvania, 68-59 on Saturday (Feb. 18).
Brown (11-13, 4-8) were led by 20 points from Grace Arnolie, who hit a career-high six threes. Alyssa Moreland scored a career-high 14 points and pulled down eight rebounds. Ada Anamekwe finished the game with 10 points and seven rebounds. Kyla Jones, Isabella Mauricio and Gianna Aiello all finished with eight points.
The win over Penn (16-9, 8-4 Ivy) marks the first win the series for Brown against the Quakers since a 59-55 overtime win on February 4, 2012. The Bears now have four Ivy League wins for the first time since the 2014-15 season.
Brown got off to a slow start, falling behind 37-25 at halftime. The Bears shot just 33 percent in the first half and were outscored 12-4 in second chance points.
The Bears quickly got back into the game with a big run to start the third quarter. Moreland started the scored with a layup, followed by an Arnolie three to cut the deficit to seven. After another Moreland layup, Anamekwe finished a strong drive to the hole and forced a Penn timeout.
Penn pushed its lead to five after a basket but Anolie responded with another three, making it a one score game. After another Penn miss, Anamekwe tied the game at 39. Penn build the lead back to five before Arnolie hit her sixth three of the night and after two-straight buckets from Jones, Brown had again tied the game at 48.
The Bears weren't able to get the lead yet as Penn hit a three but a layup by Aiello and a free throw by Mauricio tied the game at 51 heading into the final quarter.
It was a much different third quarter from a night before when Brown was held to 0-for-11 shooting by Princeton. The Bears shot 11-for-16 (69 percent) from the floor in the third against the Quakers.
"Tonight we were the aggressor," said Moreland. "We took charge in everything, every rebound, every loose ball, we wanted it more. That was the difference.
Brown took its first lead of the game one minute into the fourth on a layup by Jones and an offensive rebound Moreland led to a layup by the freshman to make the lead four. Three minutes later, Moreland picked up a steal and took it the length of the court to make Brown's lead 57-51.
The game would go back and forth until Anamekwe and Moreland added two more buckets, pushing the lead to eight. Brown would then close out the game from the free throw line to secure the win.
The Bears shot 55 percent from the floor and dominated inside with a 28-14 advantage in the paint in the second half. Brown flipped the script on second chance points as well, winning that battle 10-6 over the final 20 minutes.
