PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown women's basketball closed out its home schedule with an 83-55 loss to Columbia on Saturday (Feb. 25).
Prior to the game, Brown celebrated its four seniors – Lexi Love, Myla Cox, Maddie Mullin and Dani Short – as well as its two senior managers – Adiza Alasa and Jeffrey So.
Brown (11-14, 4-9 Ivy) was led in the game by Kyla Jones, who finished the game with 27 points on 13-for-20 shooting. Grace Arnolie finished with 15 points, going 4-for-8 from deep. No other Bear scored more than three points in the game.
Jones was tied with Gianna Aiello on the night with six rebounds to lead Brown but the Bears were outrebounded by Columbia (22-4, 11-2 Ivy) 54-31, including 25-3 on the offensive end. Brown was outscored 21-6 in second chance points.
The Bears also struggled turning over the ball against Columbia's defense. Brown committed 24 turnovers, the highest amount in the last eight games. The Lions turned Brown's turnovers into 34 points and held an 18-2 advantage in fast break points.
The Bears jumped out to an early lead as Kyla Jones scored five points and Myla Cox and Ada Anamekwe each had a basket to put the Bears up 9-2 just over three minutes into the game. Columbia came alive after that, going on a 20-0 run to take a 22-9 lead. A Jones basket and three by Grace Arnolie made it a 10 point game after the first quarter.
Columbia pushed its lead to 20 midway through the second before back-to-back threes by Arnolie cut the lead back to 14. Brown was not able to get any closer the rest of the half, trailing 46-28 at the break.
Jones scored the first six points of the second half for the Bears but the deficit continued to stay around 20. Arnolie scored four points and Jones scored Brown's last four points of the quarter as the duo were the only Bears to get on the board in the third.
Maddie Mullin capped her senior day with a deep three in the fourth quarter but the Lions continued to keep the Bears at bay.
Columbia was led by Kaitlyn Davis with 17 points, 13 rebounds and six assists. Four other Lions also finished in double figures. Columbia did a lot of damage at the free throw line, outscoring Brown 19-1 from the stripe.
