HANOVER, N.H. – Entering ECAC's as the No. 7 seed, the Brown women's tennis team defied the odds and defeated top-seeded Princeton, 4-1, to claim the tournament championship Sunday afternoon at the Boss Tennis Center.
Â
The Bears took down No. 2 Penn (4-0), No. 6 Columbia (4-1) and No. 1 Princeton to win the championship.
Â
Freshman Vivian Miller and junior Nora Lee won a thriller at second doubles, taking the match in a tightly contested tiebreaker (79-67). Freshman Phoebe Peus and sophomore Lindsey Hofflander took third doubles (6-3) for the first point of the match.
Â
Peus (6-4, 6-4) won third singles and sophomore Addison Ahlstrom won her match at fifth singles (6-3, 6-1) to give Brown a 3-1 advantage. Miller then won second singles to clinch the match and secure the championship.
"There are so many things our team did well today," said Head Coach Lucie Schmidhauser. "But the most important element was the way they competed from the first point to the last in every match. Winning the doubles point was so crucial today. Lindsey and Phoebe played really exciting and explosive doubles to bring us one doubles match away from taking the doubles point. Nora and Vivian showed so much resilience in their 7-6 win saving a couple of match points to put us up 1-0. Phoebe, Addie and Vivian were so clutch in closing out their matches to give us the win, executing well in crucial stages of their singles matches."
"What I'm the most proud of is the way our team competed for three consecutive days with game style clarity and incredible grit. It was a complete team effort, with each member contributing to our success. Our players know they can count on each other to bring maximum effort and fight into each match and that is so important in building and maintaining a championship culture. Now the key is not to get satisfied with today's result, but to keep growing and improving as competitors."
