Track and Field Wraps up Successful Weekend at Pair of Meets

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Brown track and field teams wrapped up a successful weekend of competition at a pair of weekend meets on Saturday. The Bears sent their field athletes and some track athletes to the Giegengack Invitational at Yale, while the remaining track athletes attended the two-day David Hemery Valentine invitational at Boston University.
The women's team saw the addition of four new marks on the program's top 10 performers list, including two from junior sprinter Anjoli Mathew, one from high jumper Rudecia Bernard, and the DMR team at the Hemery Invite. The men's team added seven marks into the top 10, including the No. 8 all-time mark in the 4x400 relay.
Individually, the men's team had three athletes take first place, including Frank Monahan-Morang (long jump) and Altan Mitchell at Yale, and Solomon Miller in the 60 meter dash at BU. The women received a pair of gold medals at Yale from Makaya Fofana (60H) and Rudecia Bernard (high jump).
Both meets were unscored, with the Giegengack Invitational featuring Brown, Dartmouth, Princeton, Yale, UConn, Quinnipiac and Southern Connecticut.
GIEGENGACK INVITATIONAL
MEN
Andrew Li ran 7.27 seconds in the prelims of the 60 meter dash to qualify for the finals, where he then finished in 7.29 seconds to take home sixth place. Li also finished in second place in the 200 meter dash with a time of 22.49 seconds. Pearson Brooks took home third place in the 400 meters with a time of 52.82.
It was a strong day for Brown's long jumpers, who swept the top five spots and six of the top seven overall in the event, which exclusively featured 12 Ivy League athletes from Brown, Yale and Dartmouth. Monahan-Morang set a new personal record with his winning long jump of 7.28 meters (23' 10.75'), moving him into eighth place on the program' top performers list.
He was followed by freshman Joseph Oduro (6.86m) in second place and senior John McNeil (6.86m) in third. Freshman JonCarlo Migaly (6.76m) and junior Sam Hurcomb (6.74m) rounded out the top five with senior Sidarth Raman (6.62m) taking seventh.
Mitchell took home the gold in the triple jump, moving up two spots into fourth place on the school's all-time list with his winning leap of 15.36 meters (50' 4.75"), a new indoor personal record. Raman followed in third place with his leap at 14.15 meters. Derek Irby also added a personal-best in the triple jump.
WOMEN
Iris Wang led Brown in third place of the 400 meter with her new personal-best time of 1:00.86, with Celia Kong-Johnson also setting a PR in the event.
Brown had four athletes finish in the finals of the 60 meter hurdles with Fofana taking first place in 8.95 seconds, a new personal-best. Junior Daryn Davis finished fourth, followed by freshmen Simone Dunbar (PR-9.23) in sixth and Adrienne Usher (9.27) taking seventh. Lauren Yeboah-Kodie turned in the fastest preliminary time at 8.73 seconds.
Bernard cleared the 1.73m (5'8") mark in the high jump to take home the gold, and set a new personal record in the process, putting her in a six-way tie for 10th on the program's all-time performers list.
In the long jump, Fofana once again led the Bears with another personal-best, this time taking fourth place at 5.44 meters. In the triple jump, Yeboah-Kodie landed on the podium in third place at 12.54 meters, with Davis close behind in fourth place (11.58m).
In the throws, the Bears were led by Kendra Ezeama's third place shot put of 13.38m, and Odenigbo who set a new career-high at 11.38 meters.
Chidinma Agbasi added a runner-up finish in the weight throw at 16.85 meters to lead the Bears in an event with 15 competitors. Kenzii Palinski topped out at an even 16.00 meters to take home sixth.
DAVID HEMERY VALENTINE INVITATIONAL
MEN
Miller took home first place out of 84 in the 60 meter dash, cruising well ahead of the second place runner by 0.08 seconds to finish in 6.91 seconds, a full 0.07 seconds ahead of his previous PR.
Marcus Gillespie ran 8.19 seconds in the prelims of the 60 meter hurdles, qualifying him for the finals. In the finals, he finished seventh overall and tied his PR at 8.12 seconds, tying his own mark for No. 5 on the program's top performers list.
In the 200 meters, Zach Love moved into 10th all-time with his PR of 22.10, surpassing his previous mark by 0.17 seconds. Abayomi Lowe finished in 22.37 for a career-best.
Jason Estrada took over the No. 4 spot on the program's top performers list with his new personal-best 48.15 seconds in the 400 meters. Jack Kelley also lowered his No. 7 mark in program history by improving his PR by 0.02 seconds in 48.40. Joshua Lim (49.29) and Zachary Pryor (50.20) also ran personal-bests for Brown in the 400m.
Naveen Sharma (1:55.72) and Henry Wood (1:56.52) both set PRs in the 800 meters. Jesse Edelstein finished the 1,000 meters in 2:27.16, shaving nearly half a second off his previous PR.
Aaron Siff-Scherr just narrowly missed his personal-best in the mile, finishing in 4:13.92.
Evan Sherman set a new personal record of 14:35.56 with his fifth place finish out of 94 runners in the 5,000 meters. In the 3,000 meters, all three of the Bears runners – Geordie Young, John Farrell and Jason Markopoulos - set new personal-best marks.
The Bears' also received a top-10 all-time mark in the 4x400m relay from Estrada, Kelley, Love and Lim, who ran the eighth-fastest time in program history in 3:14.59.
WOMEN
Mathew set a pair of personal records in both the 200m and 400m, running the No. 9 time in program history in the 200 meters at 24.78 seconds, and the No. 7 time in the 400 meters at 55.85 seconds. Freshman Jenna Lowrey added a personal-record in the 400 meters with her career-best mark of 58.45 seconds.
Junior Stephanie Kriss (2:13.97), freshman Julia Schreifer and fellow first-year Kaela Brenner all PR-ed in the 800 meters. Four Bears competed in the mile with Nimrit Ahuja (PR-4:55.21), Isa Stronski (4:56.45), and Isolde McManus (PR-4:57.41) all breaking the five-minute mark, and Olivia Takla (5:04.61) also setting new PR.
Lily Harding led the way for Brown in the 3,000 meters, and Emily Moni and Grace Dorantes both set personal-bests in the 5,000 meters.
The women's DMR team of Stronski (3:35.0), Willig (57.42), Kriss (2:14.9) and Ahuja (4:54.1) all combined on the eighth-fastest time in program history of 11:41.61. Brown's B-team also had a strong showing with Takla, Brenner, Schreifer and McManus finishing in 11:51.99.
Next up, the Bears will host the annual Brown Invitational next Saturday, February 18 at the Olney-Margolies Athletic Center in the team's final tune-up ahead of the Ivy League Heptagonal Championships.
