Men's Hockey Falls to Northeastern in Non-Conference Play
12/9/2023 10:13:00 PM | Men's Ice Hockey
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown Bears (4-7-1, 2-5-0 ECAC) dropped a non-conference matchup to the Northeastern Huskies (5-8-1, 1-8-0 HEA) Saturday night at Meehan Auditorium.
"I thought that we had really good games out of a lot of guys," said head coach Brendan Whittet '94. "The game changed and hinged on the fact that they got a short-handed goal and a power play goal, the latter was unlucky with a broken stick to go down 5-on-3.
"I wasn't disappointed at all with the effort, we got great efforts and high-compete from a lot of guys. We definitively have to find a way to be better on the power play and find a way to be better around the net. You have to score more than one goal when you have 36 shots on goal. Credit to their goalie, he made some ridiculous stops.
"As I told the guys, you can never be satisfied losing hockey games, we cannot have that mentality, which we don't. Our goal is to win every time we step on the ice and we need a little bit more in order to do that consistently. But we're close and we'll keep working."
Northeastern struck first as Alex Campbell tallied his seventh goal of the season 5:55 into the opening period. Campbell collected a pass from Justin Hryckowian following a Bruno defensive zone turnover for the night's first goal.
Dean Bauchiero found the back of the net for his first career goal to tie the game at 1-1 halfway through the second period. Bauchiero screened Northeastern goaltender Cameron Whitehead (35 saves) and re-directed a point shot from Jackson Munro for the goal.
The Huskies broke the deadlock 13:13 into the middle frame with a shorthanded goal from Jack Williams. Dylan Hryckowian forced a Brown turnover and hit Williams with a pass for a breakaway on Brown goaltender Lawton Zacher (22 saves).
Northeastern extended the lead with a power play goal from Campbell with 59 seconds remaining in the second to take a 3-1 lead to the third period.
Zacher made the save of the night 13:10 into the third period, moving across the crease to rob Gunnarwolfe Fontaine of a goal with a quick glove save.
Whitehead made a great save against Alex Pineau with 4:40 remaining in the third on a Brown power play to preserve the two-goal lead.
Campbell capped the hat trick with an empty net goal in the final minute of the third to push the final to 4-1.
