Men's Hockey Hosts Merrimack Friday; #10 Providence in Mayor's Cup Saturday

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown Bears (4-7-1, 2-5-0 ECAC) close out 2023 and the non-conference schedule against the Merrimack Warriors (6-9-1, 2-6-1 HEA) on Friday before taking on the tenth-ranked Providence College Friars (9-5-2, 4-3-2 HEA) in the Mayor's Cup on Saturday.
Both games are scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. and will stream on ESPN+ in the United States and on Stretch Internet internationally.

SCOUTING THE BEARS
- Brown enters the final weekend of the 2023 calendar year with a 4-7-1 overall record and 2-5-0 ECAC mark. Most recently, Brown skated to a 2-2 tie against LIU (Dec. 1) and a 4-1 win at Stonehill (Dec. 3) before suffering a 4-1 loss against Northeastern (Dec. 9).
- Freshman Max Scott leads the Bears with 10 assists and 14 points through 12 games. His 1.17 points per game rank fourth in the conference and 17th in the NCAA.
- Sophomore Ryan St. Louis leads the team with nine goals and ranks second with 12 points. His 0.75 goals per game lead the ECAC.
- Goaltender Lawton Zacher holds a 2.63 goals against average and .911 save percentage in eight starts.
- Merrimack enters the weekend with a 6-9-1 overall record and 2-6-1 Hockey East mark.
- The Warriors look to snap a three-game losing streak after falling twice to Boston University and at Yale earlier this month.
- Merrimack's offense ranks in the middle of the pack with 3.0 goals per game. Alex Jefferies leads the team with eight goals. Matt Copponi leads Merrimack with 17 points and is tied for the team lead with Zach Bookman at 14 assists.
- Defensively, Merrimack allows 2.9 goals per game with Zachary Borgiel leading the goaltenders with a 2.59 goals against average and .912 save percentage. Borgiel has made eight starts. Hugo Ollas has also made eight starts and he holds a 2.91 goals against average and .904 save percentage.
- Merrimack's power play comes in at 16.7% (9-54) to rank 40th nationally. The penalty kill clicks at 83.3% (45-54) to rank 22nd in the country.
- Friday marks the 16th meeting between Brown and Merrimack dating back to 1975.
- The Bears hold a 6-7-2 all-time record against Merrimack and a 4-2-0 home record.
- Brown took a 6-2 road win over #8 Merrimack last January at Lawler Rink.
- Providence enters the weekend ranked 10th in the nation per both the USCHO.com and the USA Today polls. The Friars are 9-5-2 this season with a 4-3-2 Hockey East conference record.
- Offensively, PC ranks 19th in the nation with 3.2 goals per game. Jaroslav Chmelar and Nick Poisson lead the Friars with nine assists and 14 points. Five different players have five goals to lead the team.
- Former Brown captain Luke Krys ranks fourth the team and leads defenseman with 10 points.
- Defensively, PC allows 2.2 goals per game to rank fourth in the country. Philip Svedeback has started all 16 games and holds a 2.13 goals against average and .908 save percentage. His goals against average ranks 11th in the NCAA.
- PC's power play has 12 goals in 61 attempts (19.7%) to rank 24th nationally. The penalty kill ranks 15th in the NCAA at 84.7% (61-72).
- Saturday marks the 107th meeting between Brown and Providence dating back to the first meeting on March 1, 1927, a 4-1 Bruno win.
- Brown holds a 48-55-3 all-time record against the Friars and an 18-23-1 record at Meehan Auditorium.
- Brown captured a 3-2 road win over #8 Providence last November at Schneider Arena.
- The Bears look to make it two straight wins against Providence for the first time since 2000. Brown beat PC on January 18, 2000 and won again on November 4 for the last win streak.
