NEW HAVEN, Conn. – No. 14 Yale scored three of its four goals in the first period, and one more in the final minute of the third, to come away with a 4-2 victory over Brown on Sunday at Ingalls Rink.
Lighting the lamp for Brown (5-9-1, 4-7-1 ECAC) were senior Cassidy Piersiak and sophomore Jade Iginla. Freshman goaltender Rory Edwards finished with 33 saves. Four different goal-scorers found the back of the net for the Bulldogs (8-6-0, 7-5-0 ECAC).
"We were a different team today once we got going late in the first, and in the second and third," said Head Coach Melanie Ruzzi. "We were back to playing characteristic of our game, which is playing faster, physical, and creating offense. It just wasn't enough, we spotted them three goals early. We had good chances down the stretch, we just didn't put it in the net."
Freshman Julia Simon fired home the first of the game at the 4:05 mark with assists from juniors Anja Trummer and Emma DeCorby. Three minutes later it was junior Anna Bargman on a five-on-three with assists from senior Elle Hartje and sophomore Gracie Gilkyson. The final Bulldog goal of the period was at the 12:48 mark from Gillkyson with helpers from juniors Vita Poniatovskaia and Ellie Reiter.
Brown got on the board with 3:14 remaining in the first period when Piersiak sent home her third of the season from center ice with an assist from junior Cameron Sikich, making the score 3-1 Yale after one.
Brown's defense stepped up in the second, not allowing a goal as Edwards stopped 10 shots in the period. Brown made it a one-goal game with 1:39 left in the second on its sixth shot on goal. Iginla fired a wrist shot and found the back of the net after assists from sophomore India McDadi and Sikich to bring the score to 3-2 before the final 20 minutes period.
Yale's sophomore Sylvia Bojarski scored an empty netter in the final minute to finish things off after a competitive third period.
Brown plays its final game of 2023 at the University of New Hampshire on Sunday, Dec. 10 at 2 p.m.
