DURHAM, N.H. – Brown women's hockey scored a trifecta of third-period goals to overcome an early deficit and come away with a 4-2 victory Sunday afternoon at UNH.
Brown improves to 6-9-1, snaps their four-game skid and secure its first road win of the season, while the Wildcats fall to 9-9-1 and lose their second-straight game after a three-game winning streak.
Sophomore Jade Iginla, Freshman Ava DeCoste, senior Maya Mangiafico and first-year Margot Norehad each found the back of the net for Brown. Junior Shea Verrier and senior Chavonne Truter scored for UNH.
"They're a resilient group," said Head Coach Melanie Ruzzi. "They're very young and have a lot of spunk to them to find a way to come back. Doyle played great in net so that helps as well. Going into finals and having our spirits high is huge. There are some things we can build on in the second half of the season which we are looking forward to."
UNH took a 2-0 lead after the first 17 minutes of the first. Verrier scored the first goal of the game at 14:29 with an assist from junior Kira Joudikis. Truter then made it a two-goal advantage at the 17:31 mark off passes from freshman Julia Cabral and senior Brianna Legros.
It was all Bears from there-on-out. Under two minutes remaining in the first, sophomore India McDadi crossed the puck in front of the net to Iginla, who fired home the first goal for Brown. DeCoste also had an assist on the play.
Senior Kaley Doyle saved nine shots in the second to keep the score 2-1 heading to the third.
It only took 16 seconds for DeCoste to even the game at two off McDadi's second assist of the day. The Bears took the lead less than five minutes later when Mangiafico snuck it past the goalie on assists from seniors Meadow Carman and Anna Shelden.
Norehad scored an empty-netter with 30 seconds left with helpers from freshman Sam Broz and junior Cameron Sikich to secure the victory.
The Bears are off until Jan. 5-6 when they host RIT on back-to-back days.
