Men's Swimming and Diving Starts Season with Win Over Dartmouth
11/4/2023 8:29:00 PM | Men's Swimming & Diving
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown men's swimming and diving kicked off its season with a big win over Dartmouth, 199-101. The Bears fell to Princeton 84-215. Brown saw strong meets from Jack Kelly who won both breaststrokes and Jonathan Gim, who earned three wins in his first meet as a Bear.
"I'm very encouraged by how well we raced today. We have put in a great block of training, lots of volume and intensity, and it was fun to shift gears a bit and prep for our home opener," said Ollie '50 & Kay Patrell Men's Swimming & Diving Coaching Chair Kevin Norman. "You could definitely sense an excitement building on deck over the last few days and it showed today in the way we competed."
Today's meet felt different than this meet has in the past. Princeton has traditionally been one of the best teams in the Ivy League, and I'm proud of how our team approached this meet mentally and would not back down. We fought hard and competed with a lot of toughness. In the process, we pulled away from a Dartmouth team that looked very good this afternoon. This is a great group and I'm excited about our upcoming stretch of meets."
Kelly's first win of the night came in the 100 backstroke with a time of 54.91. His second win of the night was in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:00.44
Gim picked up the victory in the 50 freestyle with a time of 20.24 and followed that with a win in the 100 freestyle, touching the wall in 44.60.
Brown started the meet with a second-place finish by the team of Zach Le-Nguyen, Kelly, Nathan Depiero and Gim in the 200 medley relay (1:29.41).
Aidan Wilson took second for Brown in the 1000 freestyle (9:16.67).
Marcus Lee earned a second-place finish in the 1000 freestyle with a time of 44.98 and a third-place finish in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:39.91.
Andrew Berzolla was second in the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:32.30.
Chris Ma finished second in the 100 butterfly with a time of 48.24.
Matthew Purcell had a third-place finish with a time of 4:00.13 in the 400 IM.
On the boards, Nicholas Shen was the top Bear in the 1-meter with a fourth-place finish (286.50) and Rowland Lawver was the top finisher for Brown in the 3-meter, also taking fourth (323.40).
