Women’s Soccer Falls in Tight NCAA Round of 32 Contest, 2-1

STANFORD, Calif. – No. 18/six seed Mississippi State (12-5-5) rallied to defeat No. 16/third seed Brown (12-3-2), 2-1, on Friday afternoon at Maloney Field at Laird Q. Cagan Stadium in the NCAA Round of 32.
The Bears took a 1-0 lead after Naya Cardoza's third goal of the season at the 60:19 mark. The Bulldogs scored back-to-back goals at 69:36 and 76:06 to advance to the third round.
FIRST HALF
Lexi Quinn's diving stop 17 minutes into the half prevented a shot attempt and moments later, Clare Gagne's beautiful save left the match scoreless.
Ava Seelenfreund's shot attempt was blocked as the match remained 0-0 after 45.
SECOND HALF
Seelenfreund began the second half with a shot on target before Cardoza's shot off Layla Shell's pass.
Mississippi State tied the match at 1-1, and Seelenfreund drew a yellow card as Brown threatened late in regulation. Sheyenne Allen's shot was saved and moments later, the Bulldogs took their first lead of the game on a right-footed shot into the net.
TOTALS
Brown outshot Mississippi State 12-to-8. There were 19 fouls on the Bears to the Bulldogs' 6.
SEASON RECORDS
Gagne concluded 2023 10-3-2 overall with seven blank sheets, and Brittany Raphino posted a career-high 13 goals and seven assists. The 13 goals allowed are tied for the eighth-lowest mark in program history.
CAREER RECORDS
Raphino will certainly find herself in the Brown Athletic Hall of Fame after finishing with 42 goals and 20 assists. Her total goals and 104 points are second most in program history. She is the lone three-time Ivy League Offensive Player of the Year in league history and became the fifth Brown student-athlete to earn First Team All-Ivy recognition four times.
Seelenfreund finished ninth in program history with 25 goals and 62 points.
