PHILADELPHIA – Brown men's soccer is on to the Ivy League Championship Game after defeating top-seeded Penn, 2-2 (3-2 in Penalty Kicks), in a thrilling, back-and-forth, semifinal matchup at Penn Park Friday night.
Scoring for the Bears were seniors Levi Pillar and Scott Gustafson for the first of his career. Senior goalkeeper Hudson Blatteis finished with four saves and came up clutch during the penalty kicks to move the Bears to the next round.
"What a fantastic game, I think first and foremost it has to be said that we've played two very good close games against Penn this year," said Scott Bratt, Zisson Family Assistant Coaching Chair. "I think today we played better than we did in our home game, we were on top for large portions of the game. We tried to play soccer, created numerous opportunities and had opportunities to win it. What impresses us as a staff is that we had setbacks, they took the lead and we got back into it, and it went to penalty's and we found a way."
"Even though it went to penalty's, with the chances created I think we deserved to win it," said Bratt. "Really pleasing. The guys will do some recovery, enjoy tomorrow and we will prepare for our final against Yale."
Penn broke the scoreless tie in the 71st minute on a goal from Leo Burney assisted by Stas Korzeniowski and Jacob Muchnick.
Brown capitalized in the 88th minute. Senior Charlie Adams set up Pillar with a perfect pass for a header that went past the diving keeper to even the score at one and force overtime.
Gustafson fired a long shot from outside the 18-yard box to give Brown a 2-1 advantage in the 98th minute. Penn then tied the game again in the 103rd minute on a goal from Korzeniowski from Burney to send the match to penalty kicks.
Senior Kojo Dadzie, sophomore Langdon Gryglas and freshman Lorenzo Amaral made their PK's and Blatteis stopped three out of five to send Brown to the championship game.
The Bears will face Yale for the title and an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. Kickoff is scheduled for Sunday at 1 p.m. at Penn Park.
