Women's Rugby Takes 34-7 Win Over Navy in NIRA Play

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown Bears (3-2) scored five consecutive tries to take a 34-0 lead over Navy (2-3) and went on to take a 34-7 win over the Midshipmen Saturday afternoon at Berylson Family Fields.
"We saw some excellent defense from our squad today sustaining several phases of pressure," said Kathleen Flores Women's Rugby Head Coach Rosalind Chou. "Kate Muldoon is really growing into her position at scrumhalf. Kendall Cunningham was a force on defense and Nikki Lynch gave us so much needed go forward. Overall, a great performance from the squad."
Morgan Cunningham scored the afternoon's first try with Kendall Cunningham hitting the conversion for an early 7-0 lead.
Akilah Cathey recorded consecutive tries to give the Bears a 17-0 lead at the halftime break.
The Bears pushed the lead to 24-0 with a penalty try in the 52nd minute. The home squad added tries from Nikki Lynch and Noelle Lewis to extend the lead to 34-0.
In the final seconds, Navy broke through on a penalty try to get on the board.
Brown hosts Penn State next Saturday (Oct. 14) at Berylson Family Fields. Saturday's match is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.
