Women's Rugby Takes 31-17 Comeback Win Over Penn State

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown Bears (4-2) erased a 10-5 halftime deficit to take a 31-17 win over the Penn State Nittany Lions (2-3) on Saturday at Berylson Family Fields.
"It was a bit of a slow start and Penn State did a great job of exploiting our defense off the maul," said Kathleen Flores Women's Rugby Head Coach Rosalind Chou. "Once we sorted out our penalty troubles we were able to string some phases together and start putting points on the board.
"Laryssa Barbosa had her first try for our program. Seniors Noelle Lewis and Ashley Amparo were strong on the wings. Freshmen Sadie Wilson, Hannah Cabarles, and Elanna Field made a defensive impact off the bench and Tarn Reilly provided consistency the whole game. Overall, it was a good team performance and we get some needed rest before facing Dartmouth."
Lewis recorded the game's first try to give the Bears a 5-0 lead just minutes in. The Nittany Lions responded with two tries before the end of the half to take a 10-5 lead into the break.
Akilah Cathey recorded eighth try of the season early in the second half and Barbosa recorded her first career try minutes later to give the Bears a 15-10 advantage. Kendall Cunningham hit the conversion on Barbosa's try to push the score to 17-10.
Cathey recorded her second try of the match with Julia Murray hitting the conversion to extend Brown's lead to 24-10.
With less than 10 minutes remaining, Nikki Lynch recorded a try for the fourth straight match with Cunningham hitting the conversion. The Nittany Lions cut into the lead at the end of the match with a try and conversion to push the score to 31-17.
Brown is off next weekend before welcoming the Dartmouth Big Green to College Hill on Sunday (Oct. 29) for Senior Day.
