Men's Hockey Drops Opener in Overtime to Yale
10/27/2023 11:23:00 PM | Men's Ice Hockey
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown freshmen Max Scott and Tyler Kopff recorded their first career goals in the season-opener, but the Yale Bulldogs (1-0-0, 1-0-0 ECAC) struck in overtime to take a 3-2 win over the Brown Bears (0-1-0, 0-1-0 ECAC) Friday night at Meehan Auditorium.
"It's the first game of the year, there will always be positives and things that we need to grow from," said head coach Brendan Whittet '94. "I'm disappointed a little bit with some of the puck management and game management, but overall, there was a lot to like and a lot to work with.
"I thought our freshmen were outstanding for the most part – from Zacher to Pineau to Scott to Kopff – I think when you look at the tape, they'll be our top players. There's a lot to like, a lot we have to improve upon, but some real good individual efforts and really good efforts from a lot of the young guys dotted throughout the lineup. You can either bury your head in game one or understand it's a long season and we've got to continue to grow as a team and we will."
Brown and Yale skated to a scoreless first period with Bruno goaltender Lawton Zacher (37 saves) turning aside all 16 shots faced in the frame.
Max Scott tallied his first career goal in his collegiate debut early in the second period, finishing a perfect pass from Matt Sutton in front of the net to beat Yale goalie Nathan Reid (23 saves). Ethan Mistry assisted on the goal for his first collegiate point.
David Chen tied the game at 9:01 of the second period with Niklas Allain and Bayard Hall assisting on the goal.
Less than a minute into the third, Briggs Gammill gave the Bulldogs a 2-1 lead with a deflection in front of the net with Chen and Dylan Herzog assisting.
Brown freshman Tyler Kopff tied the game at 2-2 with 4:05 remaining in the third with his first career goal. Sutton picked up his second assist of the night with Alex Pineau recording his first collegiate point with the secondary assist.
Brown was unable to convert on a power play that began at the end of the third period and carried into overtime.
Rhys Bentham picked up a feed from Gammill following a Brown turnover and found the back of the net for the overtime winner at 3:47 of the extra frame.
