PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown women's gymnastics team tied its season-high with 193.625 points and set a new season-high on three events to take home first place in the Bears' home-opening quad meet on Sunday.
Brown's 193.625 points ties its season-high from last weekend's quad meet at Oregon State. Bridgeport took second place with 191.125 points, Southern Connecticut State totaled 188.975 for third place, and RIC finished fourth with 185.800.
Brown was led by sophomore Julia Bedell, who took first place on floor and tied for first on vault. Junior Asta-Sollilja Farrell tied for first on bars, while Abby Contello (vault), Lauren McKeown (bars), and Carolanne Van Zandt (floor) all added third place finishes.
Brown started off the meet by posting a 48.175 on vault with sophomore Julia Bedell anchoring and posting a team-high score of 9.800 to tie for first place overall. Contello was next at 9.750, tying for third. The Bears' score stood in second place after one rotation, behind Bridgeport's 48.775 mark on beam.
"I feel like on that first event you always have those nerves, and now that we're home in front of our friends and family we had to focus in," head coach Brittany Harris said. "We got vault out of the way and refocused, and started fresh on one event at a time. We fought for everything."
In the second rotation, the Bears posted a season-high 48.550 on bars to take the lead with 96.725 points. Farrell led the way for Brown at 9.750 to tie for first, followed by a career-high 9.725 from Lauren McKeown, who finished third. Leading off, Lauren Lazaro scored 9.700 to tie for fourth, along with teammate Ella Poley.
Brown posted another season-high score on beam at 48.175 to hold 144.900 points through three rotations. Angela Xing and Abby Contello tied for the team lead at 9.750 to pace Brown, with Contello's mark tying her career-high from last season.
Finishing up on floor, Brown turned in a season-high on its third consecutive event with Bedell taking first place overall in 9.825, tying her season-high. Van Zandt scored a season-high 9.775 to finish in third place, Lazaro finished fourth with a season-high mark of 9.750, and Maya Davis tied for eighth with a season-high 9.700.
"Julia's been a rock on vault and floor," Harris said. "To be in the anchor position on both of those events, it's really good that she can focus in and get the job done and not be overwhelmed. I'm super excited that she continues to build every week. You can see her putting the work in at practice, and it's paying off in the meets. For Lauren, she is just a rock being a senior and veteran. It's always nice to have a strong start on each event and she has been great every week for us."
Brown will return to action next Sunday, February 5 when it welcomes Southern Connecticut State back to the Pizzitola Sports Center for a dual meet. Start time is 1 p.m.
