Mauricio scores 21 in tight loss against Cornell

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown women's basketball fell to Cornell, 66-61 on Saturday as the first half of the Ivy League season came to a close.
Brown (8-11, 1-6) was led by 21 points from Isabella Mauricio and Gianna Aiello also scored in double-figures with a career-high 12 points. The Bears finished the game with 11 assists as Alyssa Moreland, Kyla Jones and Lexi Love all finished the game with three assists.
Anamekwe led Brown with eight rebounds and Aiello added seven. The Bears finished the game with 11 steals, led by three from Anamekwe. Moreland, Mauricio, Arnolie and Amanda Latkany all had two steals.
The Bears trailed for the majority of the game after falling behind 6-0. Throughout the first half, Brown got the game within one score multiple times but Cornell (9-11, 2-5) always kept the Bears at bay. Brown won the second quarter 17-11 but trailed 31-29 at the break. Mauricio led Brown with 13 points in the first half.
Cornell took a six-point lead a few minutes into the third, but Brown responded with a layup by Kyla Jones and a floater by Mauricio that pulled Brown within two. After a steal by Grace Arnolie, a layup by Ada Anamekwe tied the game at 37.
Cornell responded with seven-straight points but Brown continued to battle. Aiello scored four points during a 6-0 run along with a layup by Love that pulled Brown within one to end the third.
Ninety seconds into the third a layup by Aiello gave Brown its first lead of the game at 49-48. After a basket by Cornell, Mauricio hit a floater to put Brown back ahead 50-49. The Bears were outscored 10-1 over the next three minutes as Cornell took a 60-52 lead at the media timeout.
Baskets by Moreland and Mauricio with less than three minutes left pull Brown within four but Cornell picked up two free throws to go back up six. With 13 seconds left, Love hit a three, making it a three-point game, but two more free throws by Cornell closed out the game.
Cornell was led by Emile Pape with 27 points and 11 rebounds. Anna Hovis has 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Brown will remain at home next weekend with games against Harvard on Friday (Feb. 3) and Dartmouth on Saturday (Feb. 4).
