Men's Hockey Knocks Off #9 Harvard

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown men's hockey (8-11-2, 4-8-2 ECAC) tallied two second period goals en route to a 3-2 home win over the ninth-ranked Harvard Crimson (13-5-1, 11-3-0 ECAC) Saturday night at Meehan Auditorium.
It marks the second straight season the Bears have taken a home win over the Crimson.
"It was a good response after last night against one of the best teams in the country," said head coach Brendan Whittet '94. "It's a tribute to the guys to be able to respond, especially with some adversity with some prior injuries to some players and injuries during the game. I thought we played really, really good defense and when they turned it up in the third a little bit Caron was there.
It's a huge win; we needed those points. It's irrelevant who you're playing but it's always nice to beat Harvard."
Ryan Bottrill snuck behind the Crimson defense 1:45 into the first period with the night's first scoring chance, but his shot struck the crossbar and play continued.
Bradley Cocca got behind the defense a minute later and beat Mitchell Gibson (19 saves) five-hole to give the Bears the early lead. Zachary Tonelli and Tony Andreozzi assisted on the senior's fourth goal of the season.
Crimson junior Sean Farrell evened the score less than a minute later at 3:42 of the first, wiring a wrist shot from the top of the slot to beat Mathieu Caron's (27 saves) blocker. Ian Moore picked up the assist on the goal.
James Crossman recorded his sixth goal of the season on Brown's first power play of the night at 6:03 of the middle frame. Crossman entered the zone with speed and went between the legs to get a shot on goal. The puck bounced off Gibson and ricocheted off a Crimson defender and over the goal line. Ryan Bottrill and Krys were credited with the assists on the goal.
Ryan Shostak doubled the Bruno lead with 5:28 remaining in the second. The freshman wired a one-timer from just below the left dot off a feed from Thomas Manty from below the goal line. Nathan Plessis picked up the secondary assist.
After 10 shots combined through the opening 40 minutes, the Crimson offense picked up the pressure in the third and had 19 shots on goal in the frame. However, Caron was stellar throughout the period, especially during two Harvard power plays late in the period.
Harvard pulled Gibson with 4:17 remaining in the game in need of two goals to tie. The Crimson broke through as Farrell found the back of the net with 22 seconds remaining.
Harvard got into the Brown zone in the waning seconds and a shot well after the whistle from Alex Laferriere resulted in a scrum with Laferriere and Plessis both picking up 10-minute misconducts.
