
Men's Hockey Returns to Action with Tuesday Night Battle at #15 UMass

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown Bears (4-9-2, 1-7-2 ECAC) return to action after more than three weeks off to take on the 15th-ranked UMass Minutemen (8-7-3, 3-6-1 HEA) Tuesday night at Mullins Arena.
Tuesday's game in Amherst is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. and will broadcast locally on NESN. For those outside the region, the game will stream on ESPN+ in the United States and on Stretch Internet internationally.

SCOUTING THE BEARS
- Brown enters 2023 with a 4-9-2 overall record with two non-conference games remaining. Brown closes the non-conference slate on Saturday (Jan. 7) at sixth-ranked Merrimack.
- Freshman Ryan Bottrill leads the team with six goals and 12 points through 15 games. Junior Jordan Tonelli and sophomore Jackson Munro are tied for the team-lead in assists (7).
- Brown's power play clicks at 18.4% with nine goals in 49 attempts. The Bears rank eighth in the ECAC and 37th in the nation.
- Defensively, Brown ranks sixth in the conference and 26th in the nation with 2.73 goals against per game. Sophomore Mathieu Caron has started all 15 games and holds a .923 save percentage and 2.44 goals against average.
- UMass enters the New Year with an 8-7-3 overall record and 3-6-1 Hockey East mark. Both polls have the Minutemen ranked 15th in the nation.
- Kenny Connors and Taylor Makar are tied for the team-lead with seven goals apiece. Connors leads UMass 17 points and is tied with Scott Morrow and Ryan Ufko for the team-lead in assists (10).
- As a team, UMass ranks 25th in the nation with 3.00 goals scored per game. UMass possesses the top-ranked power play in the nation with 16 goals in 47 attempts (34%).
- Defensively, UMass allows 2.61 goals per game to rank 19th in the NCAA. The penalty kill has allowed 12 goals in 59 attempts (79.7%) to rank 34th in the NCAA.
- Between the pipes, sophomore Luke Pavicich has made 13 starts and holds a 2.48 goals against average and .926 save percentage. Junior Cole Brady holds a 2.95 goals against and .919 save percentage in four starts.
- Tuesday marks the 12th meeting between Brown and UMass in a series dating back to 1930.
- The Bears and Minutemen met annually from 1930 to 1935 with the Minutemen winning the sixth and final meeting to break a Bruno streak.
- Brown took wins in single meetings in 1948, 1962, and 1970. In the two meetings this century, UMass took wins in 2001 and 2019.
- Caron has started all 15 games to start the 2022-23 campaign. Dating back to last season, Caron has made 28 straight starts between the pipes.
- The Abbottsford, British Columbia native holds a .923 save percentage and 2.44 goals against average this season. Caron's save percentage ranks third in the ECAC and 12th in the NCAA.
- Freshman Ryan Bottrill pushed his point streak to six games with his game-tying goal at Clarkson (Dec. 9).
- The Chandler, Arizona native leads the team in goals (6) and points (12).
- Bottrill picked up ECAC Rookie of the Week honors after his five-point weekend against the LIU Sharks (Dec. 3-4).
- Junior Jordan Tonelli recorded points in five straight non-conference games. Tonelli picked up a goal and six assists for seven points, culminating in consecutive two-point nights against the LIU Sharks (Dec. 3-4).
