Bears drop game against Yale, 72-59

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown women's basketball was led by 14 points from Isabella Mauricio, but the Bears (8-9, 1-4 Ivy) lost to Yale (10-8, 4-1 Ivy), 72-59 on Monday afternoon (Jan. 16).
Mauricio scored in double figures for the first time in Ivy League play, last reaching the mark at Florida Gulf Coast on Dec. 28. Mauricio hit four threes for Brown. Grace Arnolie also reached double-figures for Brown with 13 points and has now scored in double-figures in her last three games and four of her last five.
Ada Anamekwe scored eight points with three steals in her first-career start. Lexi Love scored seven points and led Brown with four assists off the bench.
Alyssa Moreland led Brown with a career-high 11 rebounds and Gianna Aiello added six.
Brown was without Kyla Jones, Charlotte Jewell and Mackenzie Leahy.
The Bears finished the game shooting 38 percent from the floor and went 8-for-25 from three-point range. Brown's eight threes are tied for the most in a game since hitting 10 against Mitchell on Dec. 10.
Brown shot 43 percent or better in each of the first three quarters, but struggled in the fourth, shooting just 13 percent. Both the Bears and the Bulldogs made nine free throws in the fourth quarter after Yale made three in the first three quarters and Brown went 0-for-1 from the stripe in the first 30 minutes.
The biggest difference in the game came with Brown turning the ball over 25 times compared to just 18 for the Bulldogs. Yale turned Brown's 25 turnovers into 32 points, while Brown turned Yale's 18 turnovers into just eight points.
In the first home game for the Bears since Dec. 10, Brown played a close contest against the Bulldogs for the majority of the game before a late run in the third quarter separated the two teams.
Arnolie led the Bears in the first quarter scoring Brown's first eight points of the game but Yale took a 14-8 lead. Mauricio responded for Brown with a layup and beat the first quarter buzzer with a three as Brown trailed 18-13.
The Bears trailed by as much as seven in the second quarter before a three by Elizabeth Nelson and buckets by Love and Amanda Latkany tied the game. After Yale went back up five, Brown finished the quarter with a three from Maddie Mullin and basket from Moreland tied the game at 29 at halftime.
Mauricio led the Bears in the third quarter with nine points, hitting three threes and after a three by Mauricio and layup from Aiello, Brown had cut Yale's lead from eight to three. The Bulldogs responded with a 7-0 run to push the lead to 10 and began the fourth quarter with five-straight points to make the score 59-45. Brown would not be able to get the game back under 10 points the rest of the way.
Yale was led by led by Mackenzie Egger, who scored 24 point and had eight rebounds, and Jenna Clark, who scored 19 points, with 12 assists and five steals.
UP NEXT
Brown will be back on the road for a game at Columbia next weekend. The Bears will take on the Lions at 2 p.m. on Saturday (Jan. 21).
