Men's Hockey Skates Past RPI for Six-Point Weekend
1/14/2023 10:25:00 PM | Men's Ice Hockey
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown men's hockey (7-10-2, 3-7-2 ECAC) pushed the win streak to three games after grinding out a 3-0 home win over the Rensselaer Engineers (8-14-1, 3-9-0 ECAC) Saturday night at Meehan Auditorium.
Brown closes the weekend with six ECAC league points to climb the standings in the first home weekend sweep since December 2021.
"It wasn't our 'A' game which is going to happen at times, but I think the sign of a team that's maturing a little bit is the fact that we found a way to win, which we did," said head coach Brendan Whittet '94. "It wasn't pretty, we got some good goaltending when we needed it, and we found a way to grind out a win and at the end of the day that's all that matters.
There are areas we can play better in, but ultimately you play to win the game and we won and we had a big weekend."
Thomas Manty put the Bears ahead with 6:53 remaining in the opening period. The sophomore created a turnover in the Rensselaer zone and patiently out-waited RPI goaltender Carson Cherepak (16 saves) before going top shelf with the backhand.
The Bears held RPI to just two shots on goal in the opening 20 minutes of play.
The Engineers began the second with more pace and finished the frame with 10 shots on goal, but Mathieu Caron (24 saves) turned aside all shots faced to preserve the one-goal lead. The Bears killed off two penalties in the frame.
After a Brown penalty early in the third, Matt Sutton had a breakaway chance on Cherepak, but the Winnipeg native made the save.
Less than a minute after Sutton's chance, James Crossman rifled a wrist shot from the top of the left circle on a rush that clanged the short-side post before crossing the goal line to double the Brown lead. Cole Quisenberry assisted on Crossman's second goal in as many nights.
Caron made a pair of ten-bell saves late in the third period to preserve the shutout, stopping a Jack Brackett breakaway chance with 5:15 remaining and robbing Sutter Muzzatti at the doorstep with 2:58 remaining.
Following Caron's save on Muzzatti, RPI pulled Cherepak for the extra attacker. With 1:06 on the clock, Nathan Plessis sealed the win with an empty-net goal from Brown's blue line to push the score to 3-0.
