PRINCETON, N.J. – Eight Bears recorded tries and 10 Bears recorded points as the Brown Bears (1-1-1) cruised past Princeton (0-3) with a 83-0 victory in NIRA conference play Saturday in New Jersey.
Noelle Lewis led the Bears with four tries with Mahdia Parker and Akilah Cathey both recording two tries.
"The Bears are showing improvement every week with the systems we've implemented this year," said Rosalind Chou, the Kathleen Flores Head Women's Rugby Coach. "It's great to see them continually grow as a squad. Every first year got a start and flyhalf Julia Murray is really taking charge of the attack. The senior leadership is also taking ownership and leading from the front.
"We will continue to challenge ourselves each week to build on this foundation and look forward to the next challenge at Army."
Cathey, Makayla Atoigue, and Kendall Cunningham all found the try zone in the opening 10 minutes with Murray hitting each conversion to give Brown the early 21-0 lead.
For Atoigue and Cunningham, the scores marked the first of their respective careers.
From there, Cathey added another try with Parker scoring two straight before captain Emerson Goodrich closed the first half with a try to make it 47-0 in favor of Brown.
Lewis recorded two tries in a six-minute span to open the scoring in the second half and added two more before the final whistle for a career-high four tries. Morgan Cunningham and Nikki Lynch also recorded tries in the second half, both marking the first try of the season for both.
Murray hit the first three conversions in the match and finished with eight to total 16 points. Erin Jessop nailed the final conversion following Lynch's try.
The Bears travel to New York next Saturday (Sept. 24) to meet Army West Point (3-0) in NIRA play. Next Saturday's game is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
