PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown Bears (2-1-1) posted their second straight shutout victory with a 33-0 home win over the Mount St. Mary's Mountaineers (0-3) on a soggy Saturday at Marvel Field.
Akilah Cathey led the Bears with two tries in the win with freshman Julia Murray nailing three conversions.
"We controlled the controllables and knew we were going to get some rain and we accepted that early on and they were singing in the rain," said Kathleen Flores Head Women's Rugby Coach Rosalind Chou. "We stuck to our gameplan and the team rallied together and enjoyed the day. Defense is a difficult thing, you have to be a real team together and it really shows how hard they're working for each other and improving every week to create pressure for our opponents."
Cathey reached the try zone in the opening minutes to but the Bears ahead 7-0 and just over 10 minutes later, Elizabeth Mahoney broke through the Mountaineer line for her first try of the season.
Mahdia Parker scored her fourth try of the season in the final seconds of the opening half to give the Bears a 19-0 lead at the break.
Nikki Lynch picked up her third try of the season early in the second half as the rain picked up at Marvel Field.
Cathey touched down for her second score of the game with 29 minutes remaining and Erin Jessop's conversion was good to make it 33-0.
Brown records its second straight shutout after taking a 83-0 road win over Princeton (Sept. 17).
The Bears remain at home to host the LIU Sharks next Saturday (Oct. 8) at Marvel. Saturday's match is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.
