PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Two goals from Ava Seelenfreund helped lead the Brown women's soccer team to a 3-0 victory over Providence Thursday evening at Stevenson-Pincince Field. The Bears improved to 5-1-1 on the season, while the Friars fell to 2-5-1.
"We really wanted to bounce back, especially from the Northeastern game the other day," head coach Kia McNeill said. "I don't think we showed up with the right effort and energy in that game and that's something that we can control. So, we talked about controlling the things that we can control and putting 90 minutes of good soccer together.
"We responded well and probably played the best soccer we've played this season so far in terms of connecting, pass completion, trying to recognize their pressure and bypass it, and be dangerous in the final third."
Seelenfreund recorded her first brace of the season. The two goals gave her six on the year and five in the Bears' last four games. Lucinda Anderson scored Brown's third goal of the night, the first of her career.
In the 16th minute, Sheyenne Allen lofted a long ball up the field that Brittany Raphino was able to bring down with her head and flick on to Seelenfreund who was streaking down the middle of the field. She caught up to the ball just inside the 18-yard box and all she needed was one touch to beat the goalie in the bottom left corner.
Just seven minutes later, Seelenfreund got her second of the night on a free kick from just outside the 18. Her right-footed shot curled up and over the wall and into the top right corner of the net.
Anderson's goal came in the 76th minute when Jessica Hinton sent a free kick into the box where Anderson controlled it and got a quick shot off through the defense that beat the keeper.
The Bears outshot the Friars on the night 17-3 including a 6-1 edge in shots on goal. Corners were 8-1 in favor of Brown.
Bella Schopp got her first collegiate start in goal and only had to make one save on the night to pick up the win and the shutout.
Raphino recorded her first assist of the season on Seelenfreund's first goal, while Allen picked up her team-leading fourth on the same play.
"I thought it was a good showing for our team," McNeill said. "Obviously, PC is great team and to get three goals on them and the shutout, it says a lot about our team. Hopefully this is just the start of a two-win weekend for us."
Brown will now travel to Oklahoma State for a matchup this Sunday, Sept. 18 at 1 p.m. CT.
